VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 37

KLUPTA KESA NAKSHA SHMASHRUM

" Let your hair and nails are short " is the hygienical dictum

advanced in this ancient saying. While rishis living in penance in

desolate forests giving up worldly activities, subsisting on minimum

basic needs, it is ordained that hair to be clipped and trimmed to

enable them fit and smart and to participate effectively in their

worldly duties. It is really amazing how this mandate of hygienical

living, makes it incumbent upon the maintenance of seemingly small

things of life but precious in the realm of health and hygiene.

It does not require elaboration how nails carry bacteria in their

pockets, if not clipped short regularly. Similarly long hair kept

loose dispell the attention of the person from his regular duties

and hinders his active participation in the duty on hand. Tonsuring

of the heads of the priests and the sishyas has been thus a

customary practice. There are to maintain short cut or crew cut hair

style as it is called.

Again the question of keeping hair short in length, gives rise to

the point, how much short. No physical limits are given to this

question and it is left to the wearer of the hair style to decide

upon and keep it done.
