GrahanA is area-bound not time-bound for sAdhakAs.One need not get stressed out that one is missing an eclipse.Infact, you are lucky in a way because,whatever said and done, an eclipse has a detrimental mental-effect on every person and unless proper sAdhana and kriyAs are taken,there is no umbrage for the same. It would not be out of place to mention here for some that the main reason why people get stressed out is: "To become somebody and To fear becoming a Nobody" People want to do what others are doing,feel they are missing something, a chance to become a somebody in sAdhana and spirituality.(It is more relevant for material pursuits though) Ofcourse,there might also be a genuine tithIkshA and tapanA to really excel in sAdhanas and do more too.However, it must be tempered according to one's conditions. Some advanced Tantric sAdhakAs chase grahanAs wherever it occurs.How they do it is left to their methods of divining. For strict srIvidhya upAsakas there is a grahana vidhi involving sUrya-grahana mantrAs of the shAktha kind which need to be gotten from one's preceptor.If you were in Chennai I would have helped you out,while Im here for sometime. However for most on the grahana-sAdhana path let me tell you this: 1) Avoid eating solid foods after 7 a.m. IST (at least 4 hours before the eclipse duration).Take a bath just before grahanA and just after the grahanA is completed.2) Fast during the duration of the eclipse and recite Divine Sthothras or do japas; the merit accrued by such recitals will be manifold. Spiritual people never let go an eclipse period without major occult performances because the merits get multiplied many times and so attaining siddhis is easier during the eclipse duration. A very long annular solar eclipse(kankana sUrya-grahanA) on January 15, 2010 - a unique eclipse that won't be exceeded in duration nor in grandeur for another 1000 years! People who pooh-pooh sAdhanas during solar eclipse as mere superstition are missing something very vital for their spiritual upliftment. During this time,the nAdis open up and connect in the body.There is a heavy laya kundalini significance to the solar eclipse. Thus, any mantrA or stOtrA done would connect all the nAdis and increase the positive effect in the person's aura manifold.However, caution must be taken to recite the mantras or litanies in a proper fashion as the possibility of a detrimental effect magnifying during the grahana samaya also exists.. We have a major annular solar eclipse on January 15, 2010. This annular solar eclipse is visible from Central and East Africa, Indian Ocean, and East Asia. It is visible as partial eclipse (regions falling under penumbral shadow) from East Europe, most of Africa, and Asia. It is visible only in the Southern most tip of India - comprising many places in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and is not visible in other places. This eclipse is unique in that its total duration of annualarity is 11 min. 8 secs. Such a long duration of annularity will not be exceeded for over 1000 years (until the annular solar eclipse on 23rd December 3043 AD!).In fact, if we take the total duration of the eclipse phenomenon, it is between 11:06 hours IST to 15:25 hours IST - a total of more than 4 hours!(Kindly check up the local duration for your respective area from NASA Website or local panchangs for your area). The other day I was reading something, a sutra... "Shakthi sandhAne' shareera utpathihi" it is said in shiva sutras. Where there is a union with shakthi,there is a new shareera(body).This is the literal import. Sutras are highly concentrated and condensed pieces of wisdom and thus one must shake it,tap it,expand it vigourously to understand what it means. As per Charvaka an ancient Indian atheist he used to say: "Dehe' Pushthi: Aham Pushti,Dehe nashte' aham nashte' " If the body is is fine,Im fine; If body is ill or destroyed then I too am destroyed. Therefore, he started saying after this: "BhasmI bhUthasya deha: kutha AyAtham?" So, a body which becomes bhasmA(which perishes and bites dust),how can it be revived again? So advices, "yAvath jeeve' sukha jeevanam" So, all throughout your life, live in merriment. Finally he ends by saying: "rinam krithvA ghritam pibe'th" Incur a debt(even) and drink ghee. In those days of non-cholestrol considerations, to drink ghee (clarified butter) was a boon.Also, if one enters debt in those days,where lot of faith used to be placed on the Law of Karma,one simply had to repay a debt fast and tried as far as possible not to enter into debts.But charvakAs philosophy says "yAvath jeevam sukha jeevanam,rinam krithvA ghritam pibeth" However, this is all perfectly erroneous spiritual logic. Lord shivA blasted long time ago charvakAs "philosophy"(read as materialism) with the words: "shakthi sandhAne' shareera uthpathihi" You are not just the gross body,the dehA or the sthula-kAya.There is something more than a mere body. These days even scientists are studying bio-electricity,bio-auric frames,etc. There are so many shareeras in our frame: sUkshma shareera,kArana shareerA, sUkshmAthisUkshma shareera,etc When the shareeras are united with Shakthi as in Iccha shakthi(the desire to gain mOkshA),gnAna shakthi(having a clear head about things and gaining more of spiritual knowledge) and kriyA shakthi(action);then a new shareera is formed. "Shakthi sandhAne' shareera uthpathi" It also means one more thing: By the practice of shaaktha philosophy, one gets a new shareera. This shareera is not the mere ephemeral body as proposed by charvakA but something beyond and to experience this grahana samaya is the most appropriate. yagnOpaveetha which you wear also has three strands one for each vedA(atharvana is not considered in this). rg vedA is the gnAna shakthi yajur veda the kriyA shakthi and sAma veda the icchA shakthi. The yagnopavItha is worn to symbolize this merging of the shakthi(shakti sandhAne') in the brahma granthi(brahma-mudi) which is unfolded at the time of attaining perfect wisdom.Then the sacred thread is discarded and one becomes a sanyAsi. Till then the yagnOpavIthA forms a spiritual armour.Symbolically,some even discard the yagnOpavIthA and do an yagnOpavItha-dhAranam(wearing a new sacred thread) after the grahana samaya to instill this fact both symbolically and mantriacally on their newly got auric bodies. In a way we all have grahanAs(grahana means that which captures/grabs ),grahAs(planets) always capture us to dole out karmic things and keep us humble.If everything goes in our favour,we tend to become really super-egoistic. We have the tri-grahanAs of ego,body and lust.(aham-puram-kAmam).We need to be free from this triple-grahana. So, we have to fight these grahanAs which clouds our consciousness every second of our life. The best means has been revealed by Bholashankara: Shakthi sandhAne' shareera uthpathihi: ! Shiva says in the sutras: "gnAnam eva annam"--gnAna is the only food. This he means considering the other shareeras in our body. I hope I have given enough annA for you to mull in Dallas!
