I am new in the forum,from Pakistan.

 

Would you like to tell me three basic excercise of yoga for initial start.

hi,

I am new to the group and yoga. my name is Trish i'm from the US Dnville,

Illinois. my doctors reccommended yoga and pilates to tone the areas i have left

to work on and i have no dea where to get started. i'd love ALL the tips i can

get.

Hello Javed Khaanzada,

 

I don't know if you are an absolute beginner,

but al least you are asking a very fundamental question.

 

My short answer is begin with Tadasana, the standing position, 

then go to Padmasana, the lotus position and 

In the third place you can do Shavasana, the lying position.

If you begin to master the three asanas you could add variations of these

asanas.

 

If you prefer a more extensive journey of investigation, I would recommend you

to go to www.en.Wikipedia.org and search for " hatha yoga " , " Patanjali " and " The

complete illustrated book of yoga " by swami Vishnu-devananda, ISBN 0-517-88431-3.

I like http://yogajournal.com. Also, Youtube has some clips on Yoga from

chair yoga to advanced stuff. You mention a doctor, so I'm assuming you have

some guidance on choosing the level of difficulty and exertion? Have you

looked for a teacher in your area?

Dear Javed,

 

 

 

Darrell brings a good point on fitness.

 

 

 

Assuming you are in good state of health, and If I were you - I would start from

Surya Namaskara A and B for a while. These will allow your body to build enough

strength to carry you through the other asanas.

When you say the areas you have left - What do you mean exactly, what areas and

what is your ultimate goal?

i have in my immediate area and there are none that i can find there are several

quite a distance away, but none close enough to travel regularly. that's why i

was hoping this group could help.

my main area's that i am most concerned with is belly, hips, and thighs, my

calves are good, andmy arms are toning nicely but those last three areas are

just stubborn. 

 

my routine includes:

20 minutes jogging

30 running

15 jogging

10-20 walking depending how far i got

20 minutes of arm strengthening- weights only using 10-15 lbs can do more chose

not to, don't want huge arm muscles

30 minutes of bodies in motion with gilad

1 hr walk in evenings

once a week i do shimmy with fit tv,

and i hav tried to do namaste (i think that's how it's spelled) yoga with fit tv

but i can't seem to get everything they are doing, i feel like i am missing

something to it.

 

now please understand an don;'t get mad at my routine but i have no idea what

else to do, for a routine. i am trying the things i have heard and seen. i

dodn't know what i should be doing and my doctor seems to think what i am doing

is fine though she admits that she doesn't exercise and has no idea what i shoul

be doing. i'm trying!

 

like i said ANY suggestions will be awesome,thanks

Hi Trish and Regds-javed.

 

My name is Mike and I have started practicing yoga for maybe 8-9 months,

with the last 6 months

seriously. I started from the " First Series " DVDs offered here

http://www.ashtanga.net/xcart/catalog/DVDs-orderby0-p-1-c-251.html.

The video will give you an introduction to the asanas (physical postures). I

would definitely

suggest reading and learning the philosophy and meditation.

 

Also, in my case, my health was that of a one/two cigarette a week smoker,

drinker and

once a while some substance abuser, with pretty much no physical activity .

At work I sat behind

a computer, so no physical activity at work or home. So my advice is if you

dont have any

serious health conditions, go into it with no worries, but slowly. Your

health will improve exponentially

as you progress.

Since you seem to have been advised yoga for some medical  (health) purpose, it

would be appropriate if you do it under the direct guidance of a trained yoga

teacher in your locality. Please refrain from following or asking for any

advice from the net, unless you have a specific query in mind that is related to

your health problem.

There are asanas that work on the muscles in these areas. Yoga Journal does

You have mentioned that your doctor referred you to Yoga and Pilates, so it

might not be a bad idea to bring your research back to her for evaluation

before launching in whole-heartedly! Having said that, though, I'd think

your existing workout should have you fit enough to experiment...

thanks for all the great tips mike. i never drink or do drugs, quit a pack a day

smoking habit 2 months ago, pretty active all day and have no health conditions,

oh wait  ilies i have asthma that since i quit smoking has gotten worse. (go

figure) but truely thanks for the link!!!

i don't know why she said yoga or pilates honestly all i knw about either is

it's alot of streching, balancing, bending, and breathing. i have some fatty

areas that i don't like and can't afford lipo not to mention it scares the heck

out of me. it's basicaly my mid-section that needs work but i ve no idea what

exercises\ activities\ workouts target those areas, and my biggest fear is that

the wrong workout will trun the fat to muscle that i don't want. there are no

trianers locally for me they re too far to travel to regularly.

 

i just feel so sad and frusterated that i can't find the answers i need, 

sometimes i feel like it's hopeless.

Seems like you are trying to get in a full fit body. For the areas you are

trying to exercise I would probably recommend Pilates for a faster results

Dear Trisha Brandt,

 

In my opinion you are doing an excellent series of PHYSICAL exercise.

 

When you want to do YOGA,  there should be more involvement of the MIND. I mean:

I am missing the word " AWARENESS " . You should give more attention to your

respiration and what you are feeling in relation to the exercises you are

doing and what you are thinking during the exercise and in relation to the

exercise.

The eight folded path of Patanjali is more than only asanas.

The yogi or yogini develops knowledge of his or her position and role in life

and is gathering knowledge of what he or she should do and what he or she should

not do in life to live  the life he or she is born for (the yama and niyama).

The asana (moving  into a position, holding deliberately and with full attention

the movement and the position of the body that can be reached, fitted to the

stage of your development) and pranayama (the role of your breath) can help to

get more awareness. And the withdrawal of the senses and the concentration of

the mind to the most important activities you are doing are  good instruments to

prepare the human being for the meditative state of the mind. According to my

degree of understanding, you wil get the most benefit from your exercise when

the mind and the body are working closely together.

To give you one exemple: when your mind is relaxed and when your breath is calm

you can relax your muscles more than when you have mental/emotional tension and

your respiration is shallow.

I would strongly advise you to read more about the ashtanga yoga as given to us

by Patanjali long time ago and what the great teachers of our time tell us to

give us more understanding.

Fat doesn't turn into muscle, dear. And women usually have a hard time

bulking up anyway because of lower testosterone levels.

 

Fat is stored calories. Burn the calories to reduce stored levels.

Separately, exercise the muscle tissue in the are to increase toning.

 

The information you are asking about is all over the web. I might suggest

asanas like boat, but isn't it easier and more informative to click through

to all those pictures in the abdomen section of yogajournal.com?

You can also do a search for Pilates or Yoga DVDs at Amazon and pick up a

couple of For Dummies beginner disks to get you started.

 

I would recommend Yoga boat, four-limbed staff, cat/cow, locust; and Pilates

Hundred and leg circles. I'd also look to diet and I'd add in an extended

burn like daily walking, elliptical or dance. ALl with the consent of your

doctor, of course.

 

I would also recommend some Internet reading on thse topics - it's

free...:).

Exercising an area, may increase muscle tone or strength in that area.

However, it will not decrease fat.

 

The only way to reduce fat is to consume fewer calories than you burn. As

a general rule, exercise will not really help you there.

 

An hour of very intense exercise burns about 500 calories. A single lowfat

fruit/nut scone from Starbucks provides ~480 calories.

 

In other words its really easy to completely undue (in caloric terms) pretty

much any amount of exercise you engage in.

 

Suggest you take a really hard look at eating habits. There's a ton of

advise about this on internet.
