As an update to Ken's article there is an article in today's local newspaper reporting that the State of Missouri will now start collecting taxes on all yoga classes taught in the state because sales tax is due on all places of "amusement, entertainment, or recreation, games and athletic events."

Comments on Ken's and Rajudev's emails:

Rightly so! Slap a tax on yoga. It has been done for years and is

called karma.

In many respects practitioners and others see yoga as a "business."

They do "exercises" with all sorts of gadgets on hand (props, clothes,

etc.) so yoga is a kind of entertainment, especially if it hurts...

No doubt you have heard of hasa yoga or the yoga of laughter.

Pranayama hasn't been considered taxable, as yet.

Don't hold your breath.

Shall we tax samadhi?

Depends on how you interpret the yamas and niyamas.

No wonder the enlightened ones regard this world as a loony bin.

In NZ yoga comes under sport but in some other countries it is a

religion. Maybe.

Well, the classification of yoga as a sport or a religion fits between

a rock and a hard place.

Sport is taxable, God is not.

I rest my case.
