Dear Swamy Desika BhakthAs :

The Makara Kandi Kaimkaryam at ThUppul for Swamy Desikan

***********************************************************************

adiyEn invites You all to take part in this noble Kaimkaryam for Swamy Desikan .

Let us now study briefly the significance of this special Makara KaNDi Kaimkaryam: Makaram as referred to earlier is linked with water( Aapa: , VaruNa) , the source of all existence and fertitlity . Makaram is connected also with Mahaa Lakshmi , the links to all kinds of everlasting wealth .

Today is Iyppasi sukla Paksha Panchami We will continue this likhita Kaimakryam with a prayer to Sri Mahaa Lakshmi , who arose from the Ocean. She is KaruNaa VaruNAlayam (Ocean and abode of Mercy) .She is sakala bhuvana maathaa , Saagara samudhbhavaa . Let us therefore reflect today on VaruNan , the Vedic God , the One known as Raajaa Varunaa (Samudhra Raajan) ,the Lord of waters. He is also the Lord of the rites and lives as the regent of the western direction.

Agni , VaruNa, Mitra and Indra in the Rg Vedam

***********************************************

These are the quart et of gods , who are eulogized most in the ancient Rg Vedam.

The first word of Rg vedam is Agni, the divine ministrant of the Yajn~am .He is saluted as the greatest bestower of desired treasures. At the highest level , Agni

is recognized as the Omniscienet Lord Himself.

VaruNa and Mitra

********************

One of the Rg Veda mantrams pay tribute Varuna and Mitra ( the duad) as the augmenters and dispensers of life giving Water and invite them to bless the rite that is being performed with its true award:

rtEna MitrAvaruNaa vrutA vrudhAvataspruSA

rtum BruhantamASATE

Another Rg Veda Mantram address them as a sapient pair and seeks them to prosper the Yajn~am of the YajamAnan and increase his strength. This mantram eulogizes them as existing for the benefit of many and as the refuge for the multitudes :

Kavee nO mitrAvaruNA tuvijAtA urukshayaa

daksha dadhAtE apasam

The significance of VaruNa as a Vedic deity of Rg Veda can be understood from the two definitions of the name VarauNa :

1.Ya: sarvAn SishDAn mumukshUn dharmAtmanO vruNOti sa VaruNa:

He is identified here as " the One who selects out, chooses and thus favours them only who are virtous and deserving to follow the path leading to freedom from bondage ".

2. Ya: SishDair-mumukshubhi: vriyatE vayyartE vaa sa VaruNa:

Alternatively,He is recognized as "The One who is chosen or selected for dedication , worship and adoption by the virtuous and spiritual persons ".

Both these definitions are complimentary and refer to the ideal AchArya-Sishya relationship in my humble opinion. Both seek out each other it seems !

Rg Vedam reveals at one place that VaruNa presides over the relationship of Man with the gods. This reminds one of the Acharyan's role as well.

Rg vedam has profound reverence for VaruNa and visualizes Him as being everywhere and pervading all things as the inner law as well as being seen beyond all things ( Rg Vedam 8.41.3).He is saluted as Omniscinet (Rg Vedam 8.41.6-7) .

The wise ,Law-abiding VaruNa is worshipped as a Soverign (King) governing all things and beholding all things that have been or shall be ( Rg Vedam I.25.7-9).

The PUrANaas and the ItihAsAs take over from the VedAs and salute VaruNa with many nAmAs : Vidvas( The Knower) , Medhira ( The wise), PracEtas ( The discriminating) , Grtsa ( The clever one), Sukratu ( the expert One), Kavi ( the clairvoyant one) ,ViSvAyu ( the abode of Life), Brhat( The Vast), BhUri ( The mighty) , PrabhUti (The Immense One) , Bhartr( The Nourisher ) , Sarit Pati ( The Lord of all that flows) ,Nadi Pati ( The Lord of Rivers) , AapAm Pati , Ambhu RaajA , Udakapati , JalAdhipa , VaaripA , JalESwara( The Lord of Waters).

The Context of Makara Kanti and its relation to VaruNan , the abode of Makarams

and Mahaa Lakshmi thus becomes clear .

It is only appropriate to plan for the samarpaNam of Makara Kanti to Swamy Desikan in gratefulness to the MahOpakArams that he has extended to us as the Supreme AchAryan in the Bhagavad RaamAnujaa lineage .

A prayerful request to you to take part in this Kaimakryam

********************************************************

Let us particpate in the Makara Kanti SamarpaNa Kaimakryam for Swamy Desikan . Please let me know of your interest to join in this Kaimkaryam . adiyEn will post a few articles on the Kaimakryam and Swamy Desikan's MahOpakAram for us .

The creation ofthis Makara Kanti is expected to be completed by the craftsmen by VaikunTha EkAdasi day and presented to Swamy Desikan in Mid January during the anushtAna KuLa Utsavam , when Lord VaradarAja and AchArya RaamAnuja will visit Swamy Desikan at His ThUppul sannidhi .We need 6 laks of Rupees to complete this Kaimakryam , which is two thirds done sofar .

NamO Sri Trayyanta DesikAya,Na dhaivam DEikAth Param ,

DhAsan , Oppilaippan Koil Varadachari Sadagopan
