Could anyone please clarify when the Prathama Upakarma and Gayathri homam be done (here in USA west coast)? We are trying our contacts in india but we are getting some varied responses. Some are saying he can change his poonal on Aug16th but not do the Kamo Karshith japam that day and do this and prathamopakarma homam Sept 14th, but also do the Gayathri Japam on Aug17th itself. Others are saying it is ok to do everything Aug16th/17th. It would be a great help if anyone could give any information regarding Prathama Upakarmam this year. On account of Thalai Avani Avittam, he should do gayathri homam instead of Japam. GATHYRI HOMAM:He should the homam with sameethu one by one to be immersed (nuni mattum) in the ghee before dropping down in the Agni. You can take the 1008 sameeth from India (to be covered in a Dhothi's kept in suit case properly). It is based on grahaNa sparsam . In India , where the grahaNam can be seen , the sparsam is after ardha rAthri ( 1.05 AM) . Hence , both Prathama and other UpAkarmAs are done on Aug 16 there . If the sparsam is before midnight ( ardha Raathri) , the Talia AvaNi avittam people can do the UpAkarma at later date as indicated by you .
