Zambia blast toll expected to hit 77

LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) -- A blast that ripped through a Chinese-owned

explosives manufacturing plant at a copper mine killed at least 51 people and

26 others are missing and feared dead, authorities said Thursday.

It was the second tragedy to hit Zambia in the space of two

weeks. The southern African nation was plunged into mourning when a truck

overloaded with schoolboys in the northern region of Luapula overturned,

killing 45.

The explosion occurred

on Wednesday morning in a workshop at the Chinese-owned plant which supplies

explosives to local copper mines.
