dear friend

there are nine naga devatas whom we worship in a simple nava naga

stotram which is as follows:

ANANTAM VASUKIM SESHAM PADMANABHAM CHA KAMBALAM

SANKHAPALAM DHRUTARASHTRAM TAKSHAKAM KALIYAM TATHA

YETANI NAVANAMANI NAGANAM CHA MAHATMANAM

SAYAMKALE PATHENITYAM PRATAH KALE VISHESHATA:

TASYA VISHAM BHAYAM NASTI SARVATRA VIJAYEEBHAVET

the simple naga gayatri is as follows:

NAVAKULANAGAYA VIDMAHE VISHADANTAYA DHIMAHI, TANNO SARPAH PRACHODAYAT.

there are other stotras like sarpasuktam, nagasahasranamavali and

separate mantras for each of the nava nagas.

the english text of the above does not denote exact pronounciation

and hence you must get these initiated by your family priest or any

learnt pandit so that you would be able to spell it correctly and get

the desired results.

Shri Panditji,

Pranams.

I visit a South Indian temple on Saturdays where among

Moorthies of Shri Ramji and Hanumanji and Navgraha, there

are also moorhties (Statues) of various Nagas-Sarpa

and the folowing lines from the Mantra You gave, inscribed

on the enclosure -

" ANANTAM VASUKIM SESHAM PADMANABHAM CHA KAMBALAM

SANKHAPALAM DHRUTARASHTRAM TAKSHAKAM KALIYAM TATHA

YETANI NAVANAMANI NAGANAM CHA '

Is it right to recite half of the Mantra as above ?

and how many times should I recite it, facing the

Moorthies ? And I recite this mentally. Is it right ?

I recite only once to pay my obesciances.

regards,

Bhaskar.

dear bhaskarji

the entire sloka mentioned may be recited and not the half one. also

this is a mere taking out the names (nama smaranam) of the nine naga

devatas whereby you seek the naga devatas to spare you from any

doshams or shapams you have. it is the belief that these nagadevatas

will not do any good (like rahu and ketu) and the only reason to

worship them is to get spared from their negative results. generally

only those people who have some sarpa dosham or shapam worship a

snake god and seek the blessings. otherwise one may just ignore this

diety.

mere recital of the above slokam once is sufficient when you visit

these dieties of snake in a temple. this mantra is akin to the

simple one sentence slokam of nine planets (adityaya cha somaya

mangalaya budhaya cha guru sukra sanibhyascha rahave ketave namaha).

when a person does not beget a child or face obstructions all along

his life, then only such natives are advised to recite this stotram.

also those natives who fear at night thinking of snakes, devils etc.

also may recite this mantra. otherwise one may just ignore these

nagamantras and recite satvik diety mantras of vishnu, ganehs, shiva

etc.
