Dear Sastriji, dear Professor-jiPranamsthank you for both your replies which helped my understanding. So does shama also mean peace as shanti does? Why we say Om Shanti and not Om Shama?Om ShantiSitaraVon: snsastri <sn.sastriAn: advaitin Gesendet: Donnerstag, den 1. April 2010, 15:42:18 UhrBetreff: Re: sanskrit: shama/shanti

Dear Sitara-ji,

Both the words are derived from the same verbal root sham which means 'to be or become calm'. A person who has attained shama is referred to in one of the upaniShads as shAnta. So both the words mean the same.

Regards,

S.N.Sastri
