Hello there.Could and will you translate this from Rumis words into

your own words and understanding

If I am eager to be nothing before I know who I am I rob myself of my

true being

Well in the words of Alan Watts I am a quacking mess

or in the words of Gurdjieff I am one particular " I " jumping from

that to another 'I "

an aggregate cluster of habits

How am I robbing myself of true being when any substantial 'I " or

sense of " I " doesn't really exist?

About nothingness..Is this nothingness something more or other than a

self loathing nothingness? It must be if it is nothing sense self

loathing is still something..Self inflation, self loathing they are

all something..So where do we go from here? How do you get off this

merry go round other than do nothing and just sit in silence?

Any translations or deep insight on this rumi passage would be

appreciated.

Thanks, Alan...new kid on the block of a

Dear Alan,

Much as I admire Rumi, we must remember he was teaching the devotional Islamic way of Sufiism. The meaning and stress of the words he uses may not be the same as in Advaita, and there is always the danger of a poor translation from the Persian original. Personally like you |I find the verse baffling.

Best wishes,

Thanks Era

Pretty helpful interpretation

you said: " Until you understand nothingness

you will never know true Faith. "

Faith is surrender to God (Self)

Yes and could probably mean when you get to nothingness you will find

that it isn't an empty vacumn but a place of reconstruction and

magical transformation and insight..So in a sense its not even faith

but a knowing

my two cents worth on that. Thanks yo for your time and help and input.

  • 1 year later...

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.

Don't go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.

Don't go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill

where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.

Don't go back to sleep.

There is no breeze, there is no dawn, there is nothing to ask for and noone to

ask for anything, there is no sleep and no going back.

There are no people and no doorsill, there is no door and no Rumi and no Coleman

Barks.

So, Werner, Geo, have you awakened yet? Feeling chipper or groggy

from the prozac?

Too bad most folks take the *easy* way out, which never deals with

the real issues of being human.

Oops, real issue of human being ?

Killing each other in innumerous wars and writing love poems, destroying this

earth, sex, crime, drugs and rock'n roll, worshipping and praying to thousand of

different gods, cunning minds cheating and exploting each other, etc etc etc ?

Life is a poem of own making, Werner. Or not. Truth is truth,

and no amount of Prozac or poetry can change it. I have not become so jaded or

depressed to want to kill myself for being unable to change my world. Death

will come soon enough.

Knowing that is sanity. Sometimes that is all I can hope for.

P: Oh cheer up. You're coming to CA. next month.

Truths here are big here. People catch 100 pound truths

sitting by the bay, everyday.

My windows are almost always open for the sea breeze to enter, for a songbird to

be heard, Pete.

And yes, I am looking forward to CA if ever I get this paperwork issue resolved.

If nonduality doesn't float yer boat, what would you like to talk about?

What was for dinner tonight? Latest sports scores? Weather today in Waverly,

Iowa?

Tim,

Because this is a Maharaj list I would talk about the 'I am' and about

self-knowledge and since I am on this list I am doing that already.

Admitted, talking non-dual does much more and much better allow to demonstrate

one's mental and intellectual brilliance. And that is the main thing most

members here are interested in.

And if there no longer is the excitement of showing and demonstrating their

mental superiority and supremacy they will get afraid of having to talk about

latest sports scores or weather today in Waverly, Iowa.

Isn't it, Tim ?

After all is said and done, what is there?

Chop wood. Carry water. And meet in the moment at hand.

On the net I can meet you where we always are... In the

oneness before the word (I Am) was made flesh. And in

the twoness of experiencing one another. (In words, in

feelings our words inspire.)

Since I can't meet you over coffee and share our stories,

I do the best I can. Keep the connection, so to speak.

Unless and until I can't and you don't want to.

Hm Anna, 'oneness before the word' ? Can you really experience that and be aware

of it, or is this oneness just speculation, something you have read about ?

I myself still am caught in the division between the observer and the observed

and I am so sorry, I can't see and realize any 'oneness'.

Neither can I Werner, it was an experience I once had... some of it still

remains... when I feel it, it feels much like bliss.

Nature still has that effect on me.

Thanks a lot for your honesty, Anna.

Honesty is a much better ground one can start from to build one's house on than

all the wildest day-dreams and hopes ever can offer.

Especially confusing one's intellectual knowledge collected from books with

already having attained does happen so often that one gets the impression that

all this lists and fora are full with enlightened people.

To be brutally honest with oneself is to live in the light of

self-awareness.

After a while, one can see one's own imperfections and not make

false accusations/projections. ;-)

Much love,
