Understanding Is, and Is Not

If you understand shadows, you understand

Is, and Is Not. This parable of shadows,

says it all, but you'll have to read between

the lines, and jump into a chasm that neither

begins, nor ends. And if you do jump, you'll

understand counterintuitive nondual sayings

such as no cause, no doer, nothing ever happened,

and so for.

Let's begin with the childish game of the shadow

of your hand on a wall. You know that a shadow is

just the absence of light. Does an absence exist?

Of course, but how? Can an absence be present? Yes,

an absence can be present by being the presence of

an absence, and you can make a rabbit out of an absence,

and a story of wolves eating rabbits, and so fore.

Absence is what makes presence noticeable. An

uninterrupted monotone goes unnoticed soon.

Consciousness is a trick of now you see it, now you

don't. Consciousness can't be conscious without

change.

So things exist (are present to consciousness)

because they are not continuous. Time is the

game of now you see it, now you don't.

So we can say, things exist, and do not, and they

neither exist, nor they don't. Causes exist

and they don't. We don't decide, but there are

choices, and shit happens, but no thing happened

at all.

Let me add to this, Pete,

Data from sensory memory gets shifted ino the short term memory where it gets

proecesed by comparing and associating it with evenetual already existing

similar data. The result will get made comnscious and then shifted into the long

term memory. When getting shifed into the long term memory the fresh and actual

data gets weaker and weaker til it totally faded away.

And so it is understandable that when no longer any new data does arrive then

also no longer any data can get made conscious.

Therefore what we call consciousness is just a constant flow of contents or data

as long as one moves through life which one also realizes as the " flow of life " .

Therefore it is false to say that consciousness is a trick of now you see it,

now you don't see it.

The " flow of life " flowes as it flowes. Sometines dull and sometimes bright and

vivid.

P: Is Werner responding to your medication, Bob?

You have been shoving the bitter pill down his

throat for some time. He is not even gaging.

maybe is time for a new prescription.

Werner needs to translate everything into his

own words. Lot's of people do that until they

see that doesn't change a thing, and that's

exactly what they want. They feel safe with

what they understand, and they are protecting

it from change, so they must translate any

new input to that same old pat phrases they love.

What perscription would you suggest, Pete ?

Eventually a cloning pill which I swallow and, how wonderful, I got a second

Pete ?

Ok, I think it would be nice if there were more people similar like you on this

earth, Pete, but on the other hand some contrasting posts like mine won't be

that dangerous to have look for stronger pills to finaly make me smell and sound

like you or Bob.

everyone knows everyone dan.

you are not special.

every you is the same you.

you are not more " enlightened'.

you are not more " knowing " .

your dan and there are 6 billion more dans.

this is your fundamental and most glaring strangeness:

that you believe that you are different.

you're in denial.

P: Well, I don't know what changes Bob has in

mind for you. I don't want to make another Pete out

of you, but it would be nice if you would understand

my words, without needing to say what I said with

your exact words. I said:

>

> " Absence is what makes presence noticeable. An

And you said:

W: Let me add to this, Pete,

P: But you did not add anything, you just rephrased

what I said:

W:And so it is understandable that when no longer any new data does arrive then

also no longer any data can get made conscious.

P: There is no need to bring long term memory into this.

A newborn has no long term memory. To check the hearing of

a newly born doctors use a loud beep, and the baby turns

his/her head in the direction of the sound, but if the

beep continuous uninterrupted the baby will stop to react,

the same is true with a flashing light. And that is what

I said above: " an uninterrupted monotone goes unnoticed soon. "

W: Therefore what we call consciousness is just a constant

flow of contents or data as long as one moves through life

which one also realizes as the " flow of life " .

Therefore it is false to say that consciousness is a trick

of now you see it, now you don't see it.

P: Haha! How is " the flow of live " life different from:

" Consciousness is a trick of now you see it, now you

> don't. Consciousness can't be conscious without

> change. "

A flow of events is events appearing and disappearing.

A flow is not different, but if you need your own words,

so be it. ;)

Sorry, Pete, a new born child already has a lonterm menory. For example the

mother's heart beat or voice and also the taste of her amniotic fluid get

stored. Surely only new intakes will get stored but that undeniably alrerady is

the beginning of a long term memory.

Hmm, why 'Haha', Pete, can you please explain why ?

I had a reason why I explained the characteristic of concsiousness in a more

lengthy way. Consciousness is its content, and each content will fade away and

becomes a content of the subconscious long term memory.

What one calls the " flow of life " is just that flow of arriving and fading away

of the contents (of consciousness).

I don't 'need' my own words. If by chance I am using different words than

someone else then the reason lies in my biograophy and in the biography of the

person I am compared with. And, btw, no one has asked me if I want my biography

or not. It just happened ...

P: How do you know that? anyway, even if he remembered his

mother's heartbeat that doesn't have anything to do with

perceiving a flashing light, or hearing a loud beep.

Maybe the following text can convince you a bit, Pete:

Summary

We used fetal habituation to repeated vibroacoustic stimulation to assess fetal

memory. After the initial stimulus, we assessed the fetuses 10 min later and

again after 24 h. 16 of 19 fetuses habituated rapidly to the stimuli at 10 min

(p=0·004) and 24 h (p=0·042) after the initial test. We conclude, therefore,

that fetuses are able to learn: they have a short-term memory of at least 10

min, and a long-term memory of at least 24 h.
