VISHNU

[Root: Vish, to pervade].

That which has expanded. The second god of the Hindu Trinity. His primary task is the preservation of the universe.

In the Rig Veda,Vishnu is considered a manifestation of solar energy, described as "striding through the seven regions of the universe in three steps and enveloping all things with the dust of his beams.

" The three steps

stand for fire, lightning, and Sun; or the three phases of Sun in its rising,

culmination and setting state. Vishnu is the embodiment of Sattwa Guna. As a

preserving and restoring power, he manifested himself to the world in a variety of forms, called avataras

These avataras are 10 in number, but the Bhagavad Purana mentions them as 22 and adds that in reality they are innumerable.

Rama and Krishna were his seventh and eighth avataras, respectively.

Vishnu is represented as a comely youth of dark-blue colour.

He has four arms, beating a conch, a discus called Sudarshana, a club, and a sword.

Sloka 120- Vishnu sahasranama

On his breast is a peculiar mark called Sri Vatsa and the jewel Kaustubha, and on his wrist is the jewel called Syamantaka.

He is sometimes represented seated on a lotus with his consort Lakshmi, or is depicted reclining on a leaf of that plant. On another occasion, he is described reclining on the serpent Seshanag, and at other times he is shown riding on his vehicle, Garuda.

He is called Narayana, meaning one who floats on water. He is associated with the watery element. His devotees have given him one thousand names, compiled as Vishnu Sahasranama, a religious scripture of great merit.

Vishnu, in the form of Krishna, proclaimed: "Having created the universe and unsoiled it, remain."

About Ugaadi in Udipi Sri KrishNa Mutt:

The first day of the month of Chaitra is the New Year's day according the lunar calendar. Similarly, the first day of the month of mesha is the new year according to the solar

calender

In Krishna Mutt, the solar system is more popular and hence Yugaadi, the New Year festival, is celebrated according to the solar calendar.

A tray containing a coconut, fruits, jewels, and a mirror is placed in front of the icon of Sri Krishna on the previous night. The next morning, these auspicious objects are the first things seen by Sri Krishna.

This ritual is known as the darshana of kaNi.

The paryaaya Swamiji then takes an oil bath first thing in the morning, and a priest reads out the almanac for the coming year to those assembled -- the latter activity is called panchaanga shravaNa. Special dishes are offered to the deities. A grand festival is arranged in the dining hall at chauki.

Ugadi marks the beginning of the New Year.

It also brings happiness with the onset of Vasanth Ruthu (spring).

It is the most important festival for Hindus, which falls on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade (Padya).

According to Hindu myths, Lord Brahma created the earth and set days, nights, dates, weeks, fortnights, months, seasons, and years to count the time.

During Ramayana period, the New Year was being celebrated on the first day of Uttharayana. So, Chaitra was the 12th month. Varahamihira,

a saint who lived in sixth century, started a new method of celebrating New Year

on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. His calculation was based on the onset of

spring.

Followers of Chandramana system (Shalivahana Shaka), mostly living in southern states including Marharashtra,Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh and Kerala, celebrate Ugadi as New Year on Chaitra Shuddha Padya.

But those who follow Vikrama Shaka system and also the devotees of Goddess Shakthi celebrate New Year on Karthika Shuddha Padya.

Ugadi name has been changed from Yuga Aadi (Yuga + Aadi means beginning of New age).

It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day - Chaithra Shuddha Prathipade or the Ugadi day.

Ugadi heralds the beginning of the New Year, new month and new day. It also marks a beginning of new life with plants acquiring new life, shoots and leaves.

Chaithra Masa (month) ends the shivering winter season. We see budding tender leaves, flowers and fruits; listen to chanting of birds and smell fragrance of flowers from distance. We find happiness booming everywhere.

So, the earth will appear in a special delight. Naturally, it is the happiest day of the year. The vibrancy of life and verdant fields and meadows full of colorful blossoms signifies growth, prosperity and well-being,

Ugadi / Gudi Padva is considered one of the four most auspicious days in the year when people start new ventures..

People prepare for the new year by cleaning and washing their houses and buying new clothes. On the festival day they decorate their houses with mango leaves and 'rangoli' designs, and pray for a prosperous new year, and visit the temples to listen to the yearly calendar — 'Panchangasravanam' as priests make predictions for the coming year.

In Maharashtra, it is reminiscent of the valiant Marathas returning home from their successful expeditions of war. They honour their favourite leader, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A gudi (banner) with a swastika -marked metal pot and silk cloth is raised to announce victory and joy.

The prasad of Ugadi/Gudi Padwa is the bitter leaves of the neem tree with jaggery. There are special foods prepared for this festival. In the southern states, puligore-a sour tamarind ricedish, bobbatlu, holige- a sweet stuffed bread and Ugadi Pachadi made of jagerry, raw mango pieces, neem flowers and tamarind is prepared

First day of the year in the lunar calendar. On this day,at dawn itself, the main door of the House is decorated with fresh, green mango leaves and the tender sprouts of the neem tree Must get up in the early morning after offering Prayer to the LORD.

After finishing the Nithya karma, must decorate the house, Pooja Room, Important Dwaaraas, with ToraNa, Ranbagavalli etc,Perform Oil bath, perform Sandhyavanadanaadi, Keep New Panachanagam before the God on a Peetam make arranagements for Pooja salakaraNe etc.

Perform mahaganapathi pooja, , peform Kuladevata archana, Perform regular, special pooja, recite stotras etc, have Bevu-Bella with good friends and relatives, take part in the sabhas filled with Good people( Sujanaru)

By Listening ( or read for themselves the new Panchangam and know what the future holds for them) to Panchanaga Shravanam, knowing about the King, Ministers etc that are ruling for the year as enumerated in the

Panachanagam of the year, those would be rid of sins, will have long life, become prosperous, rise to heights, enjoy extreme happiness, get children, grandchildren.

Plant Profile

Family : Asteraceae

Indian name : Davanam (Sanskrit)

Davana (Hindi)

Davana (Kannada)

Davanam (Tamil)

Species : Artemisia pallens

Distribution : India

_ Davana is an important annual aromatic herb, much prized in India for its delicate

fragrance.

Uses

_ Cosmetics, Flavouring beverages, confectionery, tobacco and perfumery

• Davana sprigs are commonly used in garlands, bouquets and religious offering in

most part of the year.

• The leaves and flowers contain essential oil valued for its exquisite and delicate

aroma and is used in high grade perfumes and cosmetics.

• The oil of davana contains hydrocarbons (20%), ester (65%) and oxygenated

compounds (15%). The esters are the major constituent responsible for the

characteristic smell of davana.

• The other constituents isolated from the oil include a sesquiterpene ketone named

‘artemone', novel sesquiterpenoids named `davanafurans' and another ketone

named `isodavanone'.

• The essential oil of davana which is a brown viscous liquid with rich fruity odour

has acquired considerable reputation in the International trade particularly in USA

and Japan where it is being used for flavouring cakes, pastries, tobacco and

beverages.

VARIETIES

• There are no named commercial varieties available in this crop.

• Seeds available from Division of Horticulture, GKVK Campus, University of

Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore – 560065 Ph: 080-233301 Note:

Prior to transplanting of the seedlings, full dose of FYM, phosphorous and potash is

incorporated into the soil. Nitrogen is applied in three equal split doses, the first being 10 days after transplanting and the subsequent two doses being at 15 days interval.

Yield and oil content

• The yield of fresh herbage including flower heads is around 12-13 tonnes per

hectare.

• Though under laboratory conditions, the oil content in whole plant after drying it

in shade for 2 days is 0.29 per cent, an average recovery of around 0.2 per cent

under large scale distillation yielding 12-13 kg of oil per hectare may be

considered satisfactory.

• When oil is extracted from the whole plant, flower heads contribute the major

portion of the oil. The contribution of leaf and stem towards percentage oil

content in a whole plant is very less.

THE STORY - Once there was an old lady in a village, who used to eat meal after worshipping SHEETLA MATA on the day of BASODA. No one else in the village used to do so.

When the King of the village heard about it, he called the old lady sending his secretary. When the lady reached in the court of king, the king asked him the reason after it. Then the old lady said him, "Maharaj, On the day of Basoda, i worship SHEETLA MATA before taking meal and

take the meal made on the previous day. So by the grace of MATA, my hut is safe".

Hearing it, the king announced in the village that every person of village worship SHEETLA MATA on the day of Basoda and eat the meal cooked on previous day.

Shri Satyadhyana Teertharu was born in an ancient family of erudite scholars in a village called Chikkodi, Karnataka state in 1872. It is a prestige and honor to the family. His purvashrama name was Sethurama, his father's name was Jayacharya.

As usual in all orthodox Brahmin families, Sethurama had his Brahmopadesa at the age of 8 and started his serious studies in Sanskrit language and shastras under the guidance of his father who was a great scholar himself.

Sethurama continued to study under his father and other well known pundits of the day. He was extremely intelligent and became an accomplished, erudite scholar in all branches of Indian philosophy, grammar and literature in Sanskrit before he completed his 20th year. He would pick up any gauntlet thrown by any adversary in any branch

of orthodox learning and win a resounding victory over him.

He was married and lead a normal life of a learned Brahmin householder, teaching Shastras to many students and scholars. At the age of 40, in 1912 he entered the fourth Ashrama, Sannyasa, and became Satyadhyana Teertharu by

name and Peethadhipathi of Uttaradhi Matha.

Work by Shri Satyadhyana Teertharu :

Shri Satyadhyana Tirtharu was a prince among scholars and a great lover of his students. He was prepared to help any one who wished to learn true philosophy to any extent. The great services he rendered to the Indian Philosophy are Writing of books and teaching of philosophy in kannada so that even the very ordinary person who is interested in philosophy could have access to all the high and profound ideas of philosophy which are available only in great works on the subject in difficult Sanskrit. Shri Satyadhyana Tirtharu was the author of the following books. In Kannada

RE: Lokamanya Tilak and SwamigaLu

Sat, 17 Mar 2001 04:32:27 +0000

Sri Lokamanaya Tilak had raised some objections against Dvaita's

interpretations of Gita in his "Gita Rahasya". Sri Sathya Dhyana

swamigaLu debated him in a place called Chikkodi and convinced him. Sri

SwamigaLu also published the same rebuttals in his marati publication "Madhwa Sudhakara".

Sri Tilak was also very humble and had great respects for the swamiji. One famous quote of their debate was, when SwamigaLu asked Sri Tilak to sitdown in Chikkodi, Tilak said "when I don't even deserve to

stand in front of a mahAjnAni like you, how can I sit down?"

I guess there are more

details on this Chikkodi debate in Tatva Vaada of October 1964. I obtained the

above information from a kannada book called "Sri Sathya Dhyanaru" published by Navarathna Narayanamurthy of SathyaDharma Vrunda, Bangalore.Regards, Murthy

Shri 1008 Shri Kavindra Teertharu was ordained in to Vedanta Samrajya of Shri Uttaradi Matha in A.D. 1456 to 1458 .Shri Kavindra Teertharu traditionally supposed to be brother of Shri Rajendra Teertharu in his poorvashrama who initiated him in to sanyasa. The entire samsthana and all the properties of the Matha were publicly handed over to Shri Kavindra Teertharu. Shri Kavindra Teertharu thus continued in the unbroken line, i.e., Uttaradi Matha. Shri Kavindra Teertharu ruled the pontificate and handed over the same to Shri Vageesha Teertharu.
