Once Shri Swamiji visited Hyderabad on that time the ruler of Golkonda Abdullah Qutab Shah came to Swamiji with intention to test the spiritual power of Shri Satyavratha Teertharu. the King sent some vessels containing the mutton, for offering the same for worship of Samsthana Devatha Shri Moola Rama .

Shri Swamiji sprikled some holy water from the counch (Kamandalam) on it.

Of course, to reach this place we have to go to the town and come to the banks of the river. The entrance to the mutt is not attractive. One has to walk on pebble stones to reach. The Brindavan together with that of Sri Rayaru and Sri Susheelendra theertha are installed in a serene and calm place in a big hall where hundred Bhakthas could sit and have darshan.Three archakas separately perform pooja . On both sides of the thre Brindavanams, space is there to perform Namaskaaram. Behind the Brindavan there is a hall (in a raised platform) for Pravachana and will not hinder Bhakthas performing PradakshiNa Namaskaaram. Whatever the inconveniences be, by meditating in that place one would find a sort of satisfaction in his life PooRvashram Name was Jayaramacharya. Author’s name Not known.]Courtesy: from: tvs at jncasr.ac.in [iGR]: AMARA DHIRENDRA!! Thu, 6 Feb 2003 06:06:02 -0000 Jayaramacharya unknown to anyone, was at that time in Kumbakonam Doing humble 'sevas' to the Moola Brindavana of Sri Vijayeendra Theertha, without any inkling of all the things that were going on at Mantralaya!Soon, Sri Guru Sri Dhirendra Teertha was the eight pontiff in life after Sri Raghavendra Theertha to ascend to the Parama Hamsa Peeta at Mantralaya. He was the 'Purva Asharama' son of the great Vaadendra Theertha and was known as Jayaramacharya. Jayaramcharya was a great scholar well versed in Veda-Sastraas and at the same time he was a very great traveler and was always on the move visiting far-off religious places . The then reigning pontiff at Mantralaya, Sri Varadendra Theertha had grown very old and was anxiously looking out for a suitable successor to ascend the 'Peeta' after his time and had decided to anoint none other than Jayaramacharya for the Peeta! But to his great dismay, Jayaramacharya was nowhere to be found! The aging pontiff Varadendra Theertha sent forth his messengers far and wide to search for Jayaramacharya and bring him to Mantralaya , but all the messengers came back empty handed and there was no trace of Jayaramacharya anywhere.!! Sri Varadendra Theertha full of anguish prayed to Sri Raghavendra Theertha to help him out of his predicament and to immediately trace outJayaramachary Ragahavendra, heeding to the prayers of Sri Varadendra theertha, appeared in the dream of Jayaramacharya and instructed him to immediately head for Mantralaya and to accept 'sanyasa' from Sri Varadendra Theertha!!

As per Gururaya's command, Jayaramacharya arrived at Mantralaya much to the joy and astonishment of everyone, particularly Sri Varadendra Theertha! Jayaramacharya was given 'sanyasa' by Varadendra theertha and was ordained with the holy name of Dhirendra theertha! Sri Dhirendra Theertha ably carried forward all the responsibilities of Sainthood and after a fruitful period, ordained Sri Buvanendra Theertha as his next successor and entered 'Brindavana' at Hosaratti!

After a lapse of about six years, Sri Dhirendra theertha appeared in a 'dream' to a disciple at the Sri Mutt at Mantralaya and instructed him to immediately resurrect' him from his Brindavana and to shift him to another spot , and thereby build a new Brindavana once again.!! Everyone was dumb struck when the disciple narrated this strange dream.!!

So accordingly it was decided to shift the Brindavana of Sri Dhirendra Theertha to a new spot! Huge crowds had gathered as the information about the impending ‘shifting'had spread every where! People were highly enthusiastic at to what would happen.!! This shifting of the Brindavana had never taken place before! The 'dismantling' of the Brindavana began in right earnest! Lo and behold! Every one was stunned when they saw the 'mortal remains' of Dhirendra Theertha which was still exactly in the same condition as it was when the first "Brindavana jodane" took place, resplendent with namas' and mudras' with a still green garland of 'tulasi', as fresh as it was when it was first interned in the Brindavana six years before!! Slowly Direndra Theertha was lifted from inside the Brindavana amidst the chanting of The Lord's name which rent the air! and then 'shifted' to the final Resting place at the very spot that Direndra Theertha had himself 'shown' to A disciple in his dreams! One thing that should be noted here, is that when Dhirendra Theertha was first placed in the 'Brindavana' he had already shed his mortal coils, but still his body was found to be very much intact inside the Brindavana!! This is indeed a 'challenge' to modern day science!! Such is the holiness' of Madhwa pontiffs' of the Parama Hamsa Peeta!!, divine messengers of Sri Hari in this Kaliyuga!!Also, it is quite apt to remember that Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamigalu had entered ' the Brindavana LIVE and still continues to be 'present' inside the Moola Brindavana at Mantralaya, meditating of Sriman Narayana and continues to Bless the multitudes of hisdevotees even to this day!!

It is called Huthaashini PoRNima:

It has been the practice to say that

i) Navarathri, Vijayadashami as Festival mainly for Khstriyas- Kings,

ii) DeepavaLi for Vyshyas, and

iii) HoLi for Shudraas.

The sprinkling of colours, uttering Bad words , collection of Firewood, dry grass etc are normally done by the last class, even though that class may object for this statement. But it has come as a tradition. May be the reason that Fire is brought from "Shudra's Keri" or "Girijana keri" for Kamadahana. Whatever may be that it is a festival to welcome the season VASANTHA. Though there is no definite Dharma shastra for this festival, people belonging to both the sex mingle and celebrate the festival with gaiety.

About the Festival NirNaya Sindhu says like this: " PhalguNa PourNamaasi Holikaa! Saacha Saayaahna Vyaapini bhadra Rahithaa Graahyaa". The Holi should be celebrated on PhaLguNa Shudhdha HuNNime night.

According to Dharma Sindhu, the festival is supposed to be done in this way:

" Mama SakuTambasya DunDaa

raakshasee preethyartham ThatpeeDaa parihaaraartham,

Holikaa PoojanaM Karishye".

In order that there is no damage done to my family, to please the demoness DoonDaa, I perform HoLikaa pooja.

" AsaamBhihi Bhaya samtrastai Kruthaathwatham Holikeyathah! Athasthwaam Poojayishyaami Bhoothe Bhoothi pradaa Bhava " "Being afraid of you, we are worshipping, Give us prosperity" is the prayer normally done. The fire wood, dry grass, cow dung etc including the fire from the " Chandala Soothika Griha" is brought by youngsters. " Chaandaala SoothikaagE haath Shishu haaritha Vahninaa! - as said in Jothir Nibhanda. After getting the HuNNime Thithi, one should go round the campfire, three times, beating on their mouth, uttering bad words and dance with instruments,

The demoness would be happy seeing this " Vamdeyat HolIkaabhoothim Sarva doShOpa Shaamthaye"

By smearing the Holi Bhasma, all sins would be washed. That night children should not be sent out of Doors- says BhaviShya PuraaNa. The words " Asyaam Nishaagame Paartha Samrakshyaa ShishavO GrihE " are worth remembering

"Huthashini" means that is associated with Agni. They call it by the name HoLiya HuNNime, Kaamana HuNNime or Vsanatha PourNime. PhaaLguNotstava, VamdanoTstava.

We see now onwards tiny leaves and buds emerging from plant and trees. The Cuckoo starts singing indicating the onset of spring season. We see Mangoes, Jasmin, Champak everywhere making the nature much more grand. The "Lagna Maasa" starts.

Though Shiva burnt Kaama , he gave half of his " Shareera" to Parvathi.

Here "Kamma Sothu Gedda. Shiva Geddu Sotha". In, let us hear the conversation between YudhishTira and KrishNa.

" KimarthaM PhaalguNasyaamthe PourNamasyaam Janardhana UtsavO jaayathe lokE Graame graamE purE purE KimarthaM shishavasthasyaaM gehE gehE ninaadhinah Holikaa deepayathe kasmaath phaalguNyaam tham

YudhisTira asked Krishna, "in PhalguNa maasayaamtha HuNNime Day , as to why, in every village, in every town , the Festival(Utsav) is celebrated ? In every house children utter bad words beating on their mouth, why they conduct campfire?-what is meant by ADEDA jaa? -What is meant by SheethoShNa?-

whom they worship?, please explain me all details"

KrishNa explains the story of Raghu maharaj first.

the trouble given by "DoNdaa" demoness and the "parihara" indicated by VasishTa. Whatever may be the names, Burning Kaama, smearing the ashes(Bhasma), sprinkling coloured water( OkuLi) , uttering bad words are the common features one could see on a HoLi HuNNime Day. Let us observe three points in this festival: i) why this festival is named as Holi(Ka) HuNNime? ii) Why Kaama is burnt? iii) Why Fire is brought from Girijana Pradesha for burning Kaama?

1) The word HoLiya HuNNime took its birth for burning PoLikaa ( HoLIge- ObbaTTu) . On that day the HoLige is offered to the Fire(Agni).

This is the story. During the reign of Raghu Raaja, there was a demoness by name "DhoonDa". She was in the habit of snatching children and eat. VasishTa tells Raghu Maharaaj that her name was " Maali" daughter of a demon. She was a " Maayaavi" Knew the art of disappearing, vanishing as she wished.

She had a boon from Shiva that she would not die from" Deva- Daanava- Maanava, from weapons, in rain, in winter, in Summer season, day in , day out, Inside the house or outside the house. In the same way as sought by HiraNya kashapu.

We must observe whatever be the conditions the Demons put, the Threemurthi's are highly intelligent that they will have a trump card and will definitely put them down.

Though shiva agreed to her conditions gave the boon with a "clause". She would be afraid of Children- - to say in kannada-

"Unmaththaraada MakkaLiMda Rutu samdhi Kaaladalli BhayavumTu". Therefore the demonness would always shout "ADaDAA" giving torture to the children. VasishTa also tells the plans to drive her away.

He says that the next day was PhaLguNa ShuDhDha HuNNIme.

Let Children collect dry grass, twigs, firewood and make a heap. * prepare the heap to the height of a humas being . Let them Lit fire. Let children holding weapons, shout at the top of their voice and we shall perform "RakShoGna Mantra Homa" .

Let all perform Pradakshina and start uttering bad words. Sing songs." The DushTa shaktis would get immersed in the Homa *Jalvantu swEschayA lOkAnishyankA yasya yanmanaH TEna shabdEna SA pApa hOmEna cha nirAkruti !!

*Sankalpa for doing this:

[*Courtesy:PalguNa Masada vishEsha dinagaLu- Sri Gurusarvabhauma, SampuTa 30,Sanchike 12, March 2004] She realised, that people had come to know the one way that was available for her death. And now she had no place in the Bhooloka. The citizens collected Fire wood, twigs, cow dung cake, old unused broken furniture, broom sticks, dry grass and heaped them in the form of an inverted cone. Prepared a big camp fire. At that time the demoness happened to pass through. They ran behind her, caught hold of her and threw in the Fire uttering bad words.

Before she died she made an appeal to the citizens that on that particular HuNNIme Day they must offer FIVE HoLige to the fire and by so doing all children would be happy. That was her desire so that people would remember her on that day. Hence the name HoLi came from the word HoLige. And Five HolIge are offered to the Fire

Here the significance of Homa suggested by VasisTa to kill the wicked.

Vritte ThushaarasamayE sitapanchadashyaaM Praatharvasantha samaye samupasthithe cha Sampraasya chootha kusumaM saha chandanEnasathyaM Hi paartha puruShENa samaaM sukhee syaath !! Next day Vasanatha Pooja to be done. The mango flower should be offered to Vasantha and later one should eat it. The Madhu maasa starts from that day. Those who eat Mango flower with Chandana that day would be happy through out that year.

This is what Sri Krishna replied to YudhishTira.

*OkuLi Snanam:

Those who do Holika pooja on PorNima day would have “OkuLi snana” By so doing they are devoid of sakala VyAdi, Bhaya etc. [*Courtesy:PalguNa Masada vishEsha dinagaLu- Sri Gurusarvabhauma, SampuTa 30,Sanchike 12, March 2004] 2) The second story is

that Hiranya Kashapu had a younger sister by name "Polikaa". Prahalada, as we are aware was ViShNu Bhaktha.

Hiranya Kashapu ordered to his sister that Prahlada should be burnt alive.

Many times Holika had entered the fire and had come out alive.

So Polika took Prahlada on the Lap and was acting to fondle him .

Heaps of Fire wood and other inflammable articles were put on them by the followers of HiranYa Kasapu, and they lit fire.

Because Prahlada was Hari Bhaktha, Lord saved him and Polikaa died in the fire and that was her end.

Hence the name Polikaa ( HoLi) HuNNime came for that day. There is a different version of the story relating to Holikaa.

She used to torture children. The Raja( King) was also cruel. He did not want to be in the bad books of the demoness. He ordered that his subjects would give one child per day by turn to the demoness.( somewhat similar to Bakasura story).

People did not like this idea. It was the turn of an aged lady. She did not want to part with her grand child. She was crying about the situation that had arisen. A Yoga Purusha happened to visit the town. He heard the plight of the aged lady. He suggested the ways and means to drive away the demoness as indicated by Vasista in the previous story. The demoness died no doubt. There is no basis for this story. Yet we see some similarity in this story also. From all these stories we may infer that children had planned in order to drive the demoness and to commemorate the memory, they started observing that day as Festival day. The next one relates to kaama Dahana.Taarakaasura was a demon who had a " vara" from Bramha that none would kill him. He was torturing the Devathas. The Devathas went to VishNu as they could not bear the trouble. Bramha suggested that the marriage of Shiva and Parvathi should take place forthwith to establish peace ( Shanti). It was destined that "Shanumukha" to be born to Shiva- Parvathi , who would be just 7 days old alone could kill Tarakasura. Shiva was in a state of deep penance. It was decided that Manmatha was the only Devatha who could induce Paravathi to love Shiva. Indra invites Manamatha and flatters him that he was the right person to do this act. Flattered by the words of Indra, Manamath boasts that he could capture Paramashiva with the help of Vasantha. Needless to say, Kamma(Manmatha) was also aware that he would die by so doing this act. Mahaa Kavi KaaLidaasa says:

Tava Prasaadhaath KusumaayudOpi SahaayamEkaM Madhu mEha labdhwaa KurYaam Hara syaapi Pinaaka paaNE Dhairya chyuthiM kE mama DhanwinOnye !! Indra says that this work has to be executed by him. " Tadgachcha Sidhdhai KurudEva kaaryaM" He says that he was able to attract all people, men and women. He was highly capable person. All devathas had faith in him. He must do this odd job for the welfare of the three Lokas. He cajoles Manmatha to try his best to make Parvathy love Shiva. In this act, he became a Martyr ( Huthatma). He went with Rathi and Vasantha to Kailasa giri. Parvathi was standing near Shiva assisting in his penance. Kaama( Manmatha) looking to the appropriate situation started shooting arrows named Aravinda, AsHoka,Chootha,Navamallikaa, neelothpala- 5flower arrows.Shiva came out of meditation, Filled with anger . With his third eye he burnt Kaama(Manmatha) for disturbing from his penance. Here "HaNe gaNNU" in kannada means" Jnaana Chakshu"),

Kaama means immature bad desire. The "Jnaana Soorya" should burn all wicked desires. That would be the True " Kaama dahana". Rathi started crying before Shiva to get him back.

Parvathi starts performing deep penance also. Shiva surrenders himself to Parvathi, Parvathi says that she had promised Rathi that she would get back her husband. Shiva looking at the plight of Rathi fulfills the promise of Parvathi.

Kaama(Manmatha) got back his life( Sashareera) to the extent of Rathi only. Kama got a place in the hearts of all men and women. He was loved by men and women alike. He got the name "Kaama Ananga","Manasija" etc. This happened on the HuNNime Day. It is called Kaamana HuNNime or Kamana Habba. The citizens collect, timber, Fire wood, twigs, cow dung cake, dry grass, old unused broken furniture, broom sticks, old clothes, rags, and heaped them in the form of an inverted cone. Prepare a big campfire. A picture depicting kaama is also drawn on a paper and kept atop the heap.(I have seen people doing like this in the Subbarayana Kere at Mysore city) They offer "HoLige" to the fire. They smear the ashes(Bhasma) on their forehead. That is why it is called Kaama dahana. 3) The love between Kaama (Manmatha) and Rathi are known to all. One saint cursed them when they were in the delight of sex at an improper time. On account of this Kaama was born in a Brahmin Family and Rathi was born as a daughter in a Harijan Family.

Kaama was sweeping the street. He saw Rathi and recollected the Poorva janma smruthi. Much against the will of his father he started living in "Girijan Keri" with Rathi. His father drove him away from the house. It was nithya Ekadashi for him in her house. Kamma spent his life in poverty, hunger and even did not have money for a single meal. He died due to hunger. The Harijans had no money, funds to perform the last rites of Kaama. Some of the friends of Kamma started bringing money by seeking alms, some started bringing firewood, cowdung cake, dry grass twigs from trees, broomstick, house hold broken furniture, old clothes, rags, etc by stealing them. They brought fire from Rathi's house and lit the pyre. It was on the HuNNime day, this happened. That is the reason the fire is brought from harijan family for performing Kaama Dahana. These stories have the saddest background. But the celebration of HoLi HuNNime has taken the new turn. They call it Vasanthotstava.

Seeing the stories, all men and women subject themselves to be inside the house due to chill weather. They are involved in work as per " Yadashanam Yaachavyavaaya kriyaa". The Spring which is going to come is being seen by them .They have to burn their Kaama to go out. If they stick to Kaama they are ordained to Death, says "Sudhanva Charithre". A person who becomes Shiva swaroopi after burning Kaama is said to have all, as Managala- Sarava Managala. They attribute that this association of Shiva- and Sarava ManagaLa swaroopa are the basis for HoLi HuNNime.

One set of people keep Kaama- Rathi and do pooja on the previous day of HoLi. Burn them on HoLi day and the next day play with coloured water(OkuLi)Some perform Kaama Rathi pooja on HolI day Morning, Burn them in the evening and play with coloured water(OkuLi)_ on 5th Day-Panachami Day.That panchami is called Ranaga Panchami.( Nest Day to Sri Vysarayara Aradhana day) OkuLi means coloured water or coloured Powder. Whether he is a king or a rich or a poor or a servant , all are permitted to sprinkle colours on others. Even on road goers.

That is why mostly men wear an old dress on a Holi day while going in the Road. Or apologize the children to leave him and not to spoil his dress. They smear to such person Holi powder on the forehead and leave him after collecting some token money. Thus in every place in every town, villages they follow this custom. Just in the name of OkuLi, sprinkling of colours on costly Dress is unwarranted.

Teasing ladies, Burning costly dress and materials, are not the way to conduct Holi Festival. This had reached some height on account of some undesired elements in some corner of India .This is not correct. Instead of Holikaa Pooja, we are observing HoLi. But it has mellowed down. Still exercising restraint, with reforms and performing on the lines of NaaDa Habba, it may bring rejoice and maintain serenity and sanctity. Kama as a martyr died and came to life He lives in the heart of everybody and everybody worship him. He lives in nature, animals, birds, and is "sarva Vyaapi". Even Paraasharaadhi saints, Vishwamitra could not escape from him. Kama is one among "Purushaartha".

As per geetha VaaNi,

"Dharmaa virudhdhaha Kaamosmi BhoothEshu BharatharShaBha:the Kaaama that is not against Dharma is ideal for Moksha Saadhane. How Holi is celebrated in different parts of India:

Walking on Fireplace:

In UP, Delhi, MP, Rajasthan,Goa, Karnataka, They celebrate Holi festival with all glamour. People walk on the Hot Fire spread on 10' x 5' area. Perform dance on them . Play with Fire Ball. The PanDas and Poojaris of PhalaThed village about 32 kms from Mathura spend the Holi night like this. In Bikaneer, the people belonging to Jasmaathi tribe dance according to rhythm on the Fire place, They hold balls of Fire and play with them . Even in the town of Peer Mayo in Goa, this tradition is followed. Those who want to walk on the fire place perform Upavasa the previous Day. They walk on the fire, some of them dance to the tunes of " Kombu, KahaLe, Nagaari sound" without any tension in their mind. Even we could see fire walking in the Mangalore area also. Here they tie a small piece of cloth to his/her waist and except this he/she has no clothes. He /She then walks on the fire with a silver plated wooden stick holding to his chest, showing upwards. In Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain, ChoTa Nagapur one could see similar Fire Dance.

In Bulgaria, Mauritius, Japan, people perform similar feats on Fire on Holi Day . They believe by so doing the yield in their field would enrich.
