i) Bhishma Dwadasi,

or Bhishma Dvadasi, is observed on the 12th day in the month of Magha (January – February) during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon). In 2010, the date of Bhishma Dwadasi is January 27. Bhisma Dwadasi is also known as Magh Shukla Dwadasi. It is widely believed that Pandavas performed the last rites of Bhishma, the son of King Shantanu and Ganga in Mahabharata, on this day.

It is popularly believed that Bhisma who was mortally wounded and was lying on a bed of arrows chose to leave the earth 58 day after the beginning of the Great War in Mahabharata. Bhishma was blessed with a boon that he can choose the day of his death. It is believed that he chose Magh Shukla Ashtami day to leave the earth and merge with Brahman.

On the Bhishma Dwadasi day, Pandavas performed the last rites of Bhishma Pitamah on the banks of Ganga.

There is a popular belief that offering Tarpan and Shradh on the day to ancestors is highly beneficial. Some people also perform Tarpan in the name of Bhishma as he had no children.

iii) SHREE VADIRAJA JAYANTHI-

Utsava at Huvina Kere- birth place of Shree Vadirajar.

North of Udipi, there is a Kshetra called Kumbhasi. Just east of it there is a village by name "Huvina Kere"(meaning lake full of flowers). In the middle of the 15th century, in the year Sarvari in 1480, Magha Shuddha Dwadashi, (Sadhana Dwadashi) in this famous village, Sri Vadiraja was born to Ramacharya and Saraswathi. He was born by the special blessings of the then pontifical head of the Sode mutt Sri Vageesha Thirtha, under a contract with the Swamiji that the child, if a male, should be handed over to him when desired. As he was actually born near the parental lands outside the house, the boy was named Bho Varaha, the name of the idol worshipped by him. Shree VageshThirtha had pre-visions that the child would become very famous. This place where Bho Varaha was born is called "Gowri Gadde" and the Paddy grown in this land is being used still for Neivedya on his Aradhana Day. There is a "Gudi" of Vadiraja at the place where he was born, in the field.
