shrI jagannAThadhAsa kRutha narasimha suLadi

English translation by Sri Hunsur Sriprasad

The antecedents of this suLAdi

are very intriguing. It is said that when Sri JagannAtha dAsaru was in sanchAra,

a poor brahmin was part of his entourage. One day, dAsaru took pity on him and

asked him about his background and the reason for his sadness. The brahmin told

dAsaru about his dire poverty and sought his blessings. dAsaru looked at him

through his gyAna driShTi and found that he had not done any dAna-dharma in the

past 3 births and that is why he had been cursed with dire poverty.

Sri Jagannatha dAsaru asked him

" What do you have with you right now? " The brahmin replied " I

have nothing other than this old rusted copper vessel (tambige) " . dAsaru

told him " Sell the tambige and with the money you get buy some lemons and

sugar. Prepare pAnaka and give it to me for naivedya. After pooja, I and my

disciples will partake your pAnaka and bless you " . The brahmin did as

instructed.

Sri Jagannatha dAsaru then

composed this narasimha suLAdi and gave upadesha to the brahmin. He asked him to stay

back at the temple they had camped and continue to do pooja to the Lord and

recite this suLAdi with devotion. The brahmin did so with utmost devotion. Over

a period of time, by the grace of the Lord (acquired by reciting this suLAdi),

the brahmin got a lot of riches and attained a high post in the local king's

durbar.

In this suLAdi, we get a glimpse of the immense devotion that Sri JagannAtha

dAsaru had for the Lord, especially His Narasimha avatAra. We see that Sri

JagannAtha dAsaru dedicates the first verse of the mangalAcharane sandhi of Sri

HarikAthamrutasAra to Lord Narasimha.

Devotion to

the Lord is that continuously surging flood of deep love & attachment to the

Lord of the Universe, which is impregnable by any amount of obstacles

encountered in its march.  It should be of such a quality & texture as

would transcend all other forms of love which one may bear towards one's own

self, or to his nearest & dearest ones in life, or to his most cherished

possessions.  It should be founded on an unshakable intellectual &

emotional conviction in the Majesty of the Lord- as the embodiment of all

spiritual excellences.

Hare Srinivasa,

First, I thank you for introducing this Suladhi to us. It was an eye opener for me.

Secondly, please accept my heart felt appreciations on the to-the-point, exact and perfect explanation to the Suladhi. It drove the message clear and simple.

If anyone could provide the audio of the same, it would enable us to learn it too.

Best regards and Humble Namaskaras

shrI jagannAThadhAsa kRutha narasimha suLadi

English translation by Sri Hunsur Sriprasad

The antecedents of this suLAdi are very intriguing. It is said that when Sri JagannAtha dAsaru was in sanchAra,  a poor brahmin was part of his entourage. One day, dAsaru took pity on him and asked him about his background and the reason for his sadness. The brahmin told dAsaru about his dire poverty and sought his blessings. dAsaru looked at him through his gyAna driShTi and found that he had not done any dAna-dharma in the past 3 births and that is why he had been cursed with dire poverty.

Sri Jagannatha dAsaru asked him " What do you have with you right now? " The brahmin replied " I have nothing other than this old rusted copper vessel (tambige) " . dAsaru told him " Sell the tambige and with the money you get buy some lemons and sugar. Prepare pAnaka and give it to me for naivedya. After pooja, I and my disciples will partake your pAnaka and bless you " . The brahmin did as instructed.

Sri Jagannatha dAsaru then composed this narasimha suLAdi and gave upadesha to the brahmin. He asked him to stay back at the temple they had camped and continue to do pooja to the Lord and recite this suLAdi with devotion. The brahmin did so with utmost devotion. Over a period of time, by the grace of the Lord (acquired by reciting this suLAdi), the brahmin got a lot of riches and attained a high post in the local king's durbar.

In this suLAdi, we get a glimpse of the immense devotion that Sri JagannAtha dAsaru had for the Lord, especially His Narasimha avatAra. We see that Sri JagannAtha dAsaru dedicates the first verse of the mangalAcharane sandhi of Sri HarikAthamrutasAra to Lord Narasimha.

svAtmAtmIya samasta vastubhyo aneka guNAdhiko antarAya sahasrenApya pratibaddo nirantara premapravAhaH ------------- a verse from Sriman Nyaya Sudha

Devotion to the Lord is that continuously surging flood of deep love & attachment to the Lord of the Universe, which is impregnable by any amount of obstacles encountered in its march.  It should be of such a quality & texture as would transcend all other forms of love which one may bear towards one's own self, or to his nearest & dearest ones in life, or to his most cherished possessions.  It should be founded on an unshakable intellectual & emotional conviction in the Majesty of the Lord- as the embodiment of all spiritual excellences.
