A BRIEF LIFE HISTORY OF SRI SUJAYEENDRA TEERTHA:

During the reign of Sri Suyameeeendra Teertha, Sri Raja

Venkataraghaveeendr a Acharya was the Divan of the Matha. He was a

learned scholar who had been trained by renowned scholars like Sri

Huli HanumantachArya, Sri Ellatturu KrishnachArya, Sri Doddaballapura

VasudevachArya. In addition, he was a very able administrator who was

managing the Matha very efficiently. He was dedicated to the

upliftment of the Matha and had earned the trust and respect of the

swamiji through his excellent work. The Swamiji realized that he would

be the ideal successor to carry on the glorious tradition of the matha

and accordingly gave him Ashrama on November 4th, 1963 with the

AshramanAma of Sri Sujayeendra teertha. In 1967 Sri Sujayeendra

teertha took over as the pontiff when Sri Suyameeeendra Teertha

departed for the Lotus feet of the Lord.

Even though the Vidyapeetha in Mantralaya had been around for a long

time, the credit for improving it and putting it on a strong footing

should go to Sri Sujayeendra teertha. He named it Sri Gurusarvabhouma

Vidyapeetha and set aside 20% of the fees charged by the Matha for

various services for `tattva-prachara' (propagation of spiritual

concepts), to be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the

Vidyapeetha. This shows the extent of commitment that he had for the

spread of knowledge. Today, the Vidyapeetha is internationally

renowned and respected.

Sri Susheeleeendra teertha started the practice of holding an annual

religious conference with discourses from renowned scholars. This is

the Sri Sameera Samaya Samvardhini Sabha. The credit for invigorating

this sabha and holding 2 conferences every year should go to Sri

Sujayeendra teertha. This enhanced the process of spreading Acharya

Madhva's teachings, and also helped in fostering the scholarly community.

As part of his emphasis on spreading knowledge, Sri Sujayeendra

teertha also had learned scholars review many old and rare manuscripts

and had them reprinted, thereby enriching the world of literature. He

personally authored many works too; out of these, the one called

`madhva matam' is the most well known.

He is also known as the Architect of modern-day Mantralaya. He

established many guest houses, dinner halls, choultries, street lamps

etc for the benefit of the millions pilgrims visiting Mantralaya. He

also established many branches and Vidyapeethas of the Matha all over

India,

enhancing its reach and appeal. He also made major changes in

the administration of the Matha and provided jobs to hundreds of

people. So, in many ways he has left behind a glorious imprint of his

stint as the Pontiff. Adherents and followers of the Matha should

remember him with gratitude for the wonderful service he has rendered

the Matha.

One of his greatest gifts to posterity and humanity is the wonderful

successor he has left behind in the form of His Holiness Sri Sri

Sushameendra Teertha, a very great devotee of Rayaru. One can gauge

the extent of his devotion and his spiritual advancement through the

fact that every one of his utterances are coming true by the grace of

Rayaru. In 1986 Sri Sushameendra Teertha took over the administration

of the Matha after Sri Sujayeendra Teertha departed for the Lotus feet

of the Lord. Sri Sushameendra Teertha had the good fortune of serving

his guru and predecessor for a year.

It is impossible to completely catalog and list the hundreds of

programmes and events that happen in Mantralaya every year. Yet, if

one were to attempt to compile the more popular ones, the entry

heading the list would undoubtedly be the Aradhane of Rayaru, which

attracts millions of devotees from all over the world. Words cannot do

justice to the pomp and grandeur that this function brings. Another

function that is observed with a lot of enthusiasm and grandeur is the

Aradhane of the current pontiff's Asharama-guru (the swamiji who gave

Ashrama to the current pontiff). This is traditionally called `MAHA

SAMARADHANA' . The current article attempts to capture in words the

dedication and glory with which the Maha Samaradhana of Sri

Sujayeendra Teertha, the Ashrama guru of the current pontiff Sri

Sushameendra Teertha, is observed.

Religious discourses by scholars are the main attraction in any

Aradhana celebration. This becomes even more relevant when the ascetic

whose aradhane is being celebrated is a well known patron of knowledge

and education like Sri Sujayeendra Teertha. Scholars from reputed

organizations visit Mantralaya and deliver discourses on a variety of

topics, over a span of 7 days. On the day of the Aradhana (called

Madhyaradhana) , in the morning, icons of Acharya Madhva and all other

leading gurus of the Matha including Sri Sujayeendra Teertha are taken

in a procession in the golden chariot of the Matha. Later, Panchamruta

abhishekha is performed to the Brindavana of Sri Sujayeendra Teertha.

CULTURAL PROGRAMMES:

Renowned artistes from all over the country are invited to Mantralaya

to display their talent. The invitation is extended to musicians,

singers, harikatha vidwans, drama artists etc. Students of the

VidyapItha in Mantralaya also participate in various cultural programmes.

SUJAYASRI AWARD

Eminent personalities who have rendered significant service to society

in various forms are recognized and feted during the mahA-samArAdhane.

In honor of Sri Sujayeendra Teertha, they are awarded an honor called

the Sujayashri Award along with an appropriate momento.

Awards and commendations for employees of the Matha:

In order to encourage employees of the Matha, the Swamiji awards

special medals to the Best Employee, Best Administrator, and Best

Branch. Each award is accompanied with a momento, certificate, and

ceremonial shawls.

Master Brain : Quiz competition for High school students:

In order to engender interest in religious, philosophical and social

matters amongst high school students in Mantralaya and surrounding

areas, a quiz competition is organized in the months leading upto the

Aradhane. Awards are handed out during Aradhane celebrations.

Sujayasri trophy – Inter-state Cricket tournament:

The Matha encourages sports also. Over 30 teams from Karnataka, Andhra

Pradesh and Tamilnadu participate in this tournament, held in and

around Mantralaya. Members of the winning team receive their prizes

and certificates from internationally renowned crickters.
