Dear Smitha,

We have a 6 month old and faced similar questions. What I learned is

the following.

Exact time to take your newborn to a temple mainly depends upon three

things.

1. There is no single answer. [answer varies from culture to culture and

place to place including people from different parts of Kerala]

**** You should try to follow your family tradition/rules or personal belief.

****

2. You need to know and follow the rules of the temple where you

are planning to take the child; (most of the temples in Kerala won't allow upto

five/six months, but there are no such restrictions in MOST of the temples

outside Kerala]

3. The 5/6 month rule is in place for maintaining the purity of the temple by

avoiding a small baby defecate/urinate inside. So, the primary thing is to try

your level best to avoid such incidents.

In Malabar we have a saying, newborn babies are too innocent and God

like that even Bhagavan feels like doing Pranams seeing such pure innocence; to

avoid such a thing we withhold taking small babies to temple!!

We wanted to take our baby to a temple before we go elsewhere and took her to

the nearby temple after 3 months. We consulted with the local priests who are

from Sringeri and Chennai.

Hope this helps.
