"Hare Rama. Hare Krishna"

Some information about our Goddess Monkombil BhagavathyMonkombu, a naturally formed island, is a small village in the Kuttanad taluk in Alleppey district. It could be considered as the headquarters of the granary of Kerala.

The village is blessed by the Goddess "MONKOMBIL AMMA"

The legend goes like this ...... a timber merchant was transporting logs of wood through the river Pamba towards Alleppey. It so happened that a log of mango tree got stuck into the shore and did not move. The merchant consulted the astrologers and found that the wood had the presence of Goddess Bhagvathi and decided to construct a temple, the place was then called as Monkombu ( derived from the Mavin - kombu ).

The temple celebrates the annual utsavam during the 10 days starting from Vishu every year. Evenings are very lively with the procession of the public alongwith "Vela kali", a folk dance form depicting warriors, enacting fighting with sword to the drum tune "thathi thako dhai dhai dho". Pallivettai is on the 7th night followed by aarattu on the 8th day. "Kodiyirakkam" is on 8th day after Aaaraattu. Two more days Utsavam is there. The 10th day (Pathamudayam) is very auspicious and is celebrated in many temples in Travancore. A very important attraction in Monkombu is the Garudan Thookam on that night.
