friends, Pranams. The January issue of Nitya Kalyan, the free English monthly spiritual E-Magazine published on behalf of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, has been uploaded in the file of Nitya Kalyan . If the food that we

take is prepared in a pure manner and is also pure, then certainly, good thoughts will arise in our mind. It is only food which is prepared in an impure manner or food, which is impure that will corrupt our thinking and affect our mental processes and make them run along crooked lines. His Holiness Jagadguru Pujyasri Jayendra Sarasvati Swamigal The King Nahusha of Chandravamsa achieved the position of Indra because of his great merits. But once he attained that position, he became arrogant. He made saptharishis to carry his palanquin. Not only that, he urged them to move fast by saying, 'sarpa sarpa'. Agasthya rishi who was also there carrying the palanquin cursed him to become

a sarpam (snake). Such is the result of arrogance and showing disrespect towards great persons. His Holiness Jagadguru Pujyasri Sankara Vijayendra Sarasvati Swamigal The ideal of the first part of the Vedas is entirely different from the ideal of the other part, the Upanishads. The ideal of the first part coincides with that of all other religions of the world except Vedanta. The ideal is enjoyment here and hereafter - man and wife, husband and children. Pay your dollar, and the priest will give you a certificate, and you will have a happy time afterwards in heaven. You will find all your people there and have

this merry-go-round without end. No tears, no weeping - only laughing. No stomachache, but yet eating. No headache, but yet parties. That, considered the priests, was the highest goal of humanity.... We see that in times of old they had these oblations and sacrifices, then the philosophers came and, instead of snatching away the symbols from the hands of the ignorant, instead of taking the negative position (which we unfortunately find so general in modern reforms), they gave them something to take their place. "Here is the symbol of fire", they said. "Very good! But here is another symbol, the earth. What a grand, great symbol! Here is a little temple, but the whole universe is a temple - people can worship anywhere. There are the peculiar figures that people draw on the

earth, and there are the altars, but here is the greatest of altars, the living, conscious human body - and to worship at this altar is far higher than the worship of any dead symbols." Swami Vivekananda on the Vedas and Upanishads It is wrong to reject the practice of the vaidheeka karmas; and it is also wrong to hold on to them permanently. These days, some people speak less of the adhyayana, yagnas and other vaidheeka karmas; they think that all these are unnecessary and that they could go straight to the Jnana Khanda. By doing like this, what they have achieved is only an intellectual ability to talk about the Upanishads; most of them are unable

to attain eternal peace, detachment and realize Self. Reason is that they have discarded the practice of ceremonious vaidheeka karmas. If this is wrong on one hand, refusing to move on to the Upanishads and remaining stagnant in vaidheeka karmas is wrong on the other hand. Maha Periyaval Sri Chandrasekarendra Sarasvati Swamigal Those who follow the virtuous way of life of a devotee indicated above, with full faith and bhakti in God, are dear to God. (Those who are devoted to God and see Him in everything automatically get these virtues and so by being a true bhakta, no special efforts are needed to keep to the path of Dharma.) Padmasri S Balakrishnan on the chapter 11 of Srimad Bhagavadgita In other words repose gives depth to one's action, and in that condition the actor is absent and made inoperative. The burden of the mind must be dropped so that one can ascend to the utmost capacity of oneself. There comes a point in the ascending when man cannot proceed any further. Dr R Ranganathan comments in his essay on Ascent and Descent. The churning went on and Vasuki could not bear it and so out of her mouth came fire and poisonous smoke and the asuras were greatly afflicted, since they were near the head of the snake. Smt Lalitha Manjunatha Rai It was not long before Ubhayabharati understood quite well that she could never score a victory over the monk (Sri Adi Sankara) in the field of Veda and Advaita. On the eighteenth day, she sprang a surprise on the Acharya. Her very first question on

that day was about passion and sex! Shri Krishnan in his narration of the life history of Adhi Sankara In every aspect of Sadhana Sankara himself has set an example. A study of Sankara Vijayam, which is biographical, is a must for the Sadhaka. He is the roll model for the seeker. The field of his exemplary activities is very wide and deep. He showed us how to fix the goals, how to plan and pursue the objective, how to be a team worker, how to teach and lead, how to interact with persons who have opposing views with sympathy and understanding, etc. Sankara was a good leader, a visionary, best communicator. Prof N M Sundaram describes, step by step, how to understand and follow the teachings of Sri Adhi Sankara. We run forward and yet we do not progress. This is because we are over-burdened with our historical despondency, economic despair, social selfishness and personal vanity. We must learn to unload ourselves and remove the crushing weights off our conscience. We must liberate our hearts from these chains gathered from the recent past so that we may really feel free to live a courageous life. Swami

Suvijnanananda It is a glorious mystery, this human nervous system we have -- our doorway to the infinite. All we need to know is which levers to pull every day. Couple of lessons from now we will begin to explore further means to systematically awaken that great realm within us. As we continue to practice, the play of pure bliss consciousness will become more and more dynamic inside. Yogani explains in his 'Advanced Yoga Practices'. Between the 'real experiences' and

the 'expression', there are a number of possibilities for distortion. In the absence of a scientific and thorough analysis of the experiences, and without an acceptable standard of evaluation of them, the answers are bound to be casual and wrong. Sri S Ravichandran explains how Meta-models help us improve our communication. Read all these and much more in the Nitya Kalyan E-magazine by joining Nitya Kalyan . If you want to receive the E-magazine Nitya Kalyan through individual e-mail or for any further details write to venkataramanks7 Contributions are welcome from the learned bhaktas of this group on any topic presenting the devotional literature relating to Lord Muruga.
