Dear Sir, Sorry to note your friend is suffering from the dosham. I can give you some info on Mayanakali. Mayanam is Tamil means crematory ground as you must be well aware of and hence this Kali is called Smashana Kali (Smashanam in Sanskrit means Crematory or charnel ground where dead bodies are burnt). Smashana-Kali - Kali Ma as the Goddess of cremation grounds and other places of Death. Her yantra was an 8 petaled lotus with multiple repetitions of the inverted triangle. The meaning was Rebirth following Death. Her priestesses, called dakinis, arrange funerals and tend the dying to what they deserve.. (Smashana Kali) The current representation of Kali is relatively new. Sometime in the mid to late 16th century, Krsnananda Agamavagisa, a Bengali mystic (born about 1500 AD.) had a powerful experience which caused him to formalize and tell of a "new" form of Kali. According to Dr. S.C. Banerji, a noted historian of Tantra, "Krsnananda is credited with the conception, for the first time, of the Kali image current in Bengal."It is said that Krsnananda Agamavagisa went to bathe in a river near a cremation-ground (either at Tarapith or Bakreshwar, both in West Bengal). There he happened to disturb a dark-skinned tribal girl who, believing she was alone, had stripped nude and was washing herself using a discarded skull-cap from a nearby funeral pyre. She had her long black hair untied and was engrossed in her ablutions. Embarassed by Krsnananda's sudden presence, she

stuck out her tongue in shyness (a reflex action still done by village girls in India). Krsnananda, who had been trying to understand how best to comprehend the many varied forms of the Dark Goddess, and how to get a direct vision of Her, had a sudden spiritual insight. He viewed this tribal girl as a living Kali, and took the "vision" of her naked dark body, long dishevelled hair, extended tongue and skull in hand as a new and especially potent icon of the Great Goddess.Using this insight as his meditation, he became perfected and a "Siddha". He had images made of this "new" and potent form of Kali and worshipped them as his deeper Self. He spread this special form of Kali far and wide. In about 1580 AD. he wrote a text known as the Tantrasara, a "Compendium of Tantras", in which he gave the following description of the Dark Goddess and which forms the basis of the typical "Bengali" Kali icon:"Possessed of complexion like the color of sapphire, blue like

the sky, extremely fierce, defeating gods and demons, three- eyed, crying very loudly, decked with all ornaments, holding a human skull and a small sword, standing on the moon and sun." Krsnananda described other forms of Kali, named Daksina Kali, Guhya Kali, Bhadra Kali, Smashana Kali and Maha Kali - meaning "Right, from the South, Kali", "Secret Kali", "Adamantine Kali", "Cremation-ground Kali" and "Great Kali", respectively. Of these, the form of Daksina Kali, also referred to as DaksinaKalika, is described by him thus:"Dishevelled hair, garland of human heads, face with long or projecting teeth, four arms, lower left holding a human head just severed, upper left holding a sword, lower right hand posed as if giving a boon, the upper right hand posed granting freedom from

fear, deep dark complexion, naked, two corpses or arrows as ornaments in the two ears, girdle of the hands of corpses, three eyes, radiant like the morning sun, standing on the chest of Mahadeva(Shiva) lying like a corpse, surrounded by jackals." The point to note is that Dakshina Kali has her right leg on the chest of Lord Shiva whereas the ugra/samhara/raktha kali has her left foot on the chest of Lord Shiva, so you can order the Dakshina Kali photo and start praying with it. (You can take a print of this photo--this Kali represents "Mayana" Kali. Please check with the priest) Kali has been conceived as an awful appearance imparting destruction and as one who is usually gaunt, has fangs, laughs loudly,

dances madly, wears garlands of corpses, sits on the back of a ghost, feeds herself on fresh human blood and resides in cremation ground, but quite strangely, despite this ugly or non-aesthetic appearance, she has been the first love, not only of the violence-edict warriors, thieves, plunderers, violent tribes or charmers but also of poets and dramatists from all over the land and from all ages. Significantly, early textual allusions to Kali worship first occur, in around sixth century, in literary works of these Sanskrit poets and dramatists. In religious texts and authorised rituals her appearance is subsequent. This phenomenon suggests that she must have been a significant deity of various tribal pantheons of the subcontinent since long before and her accession in Brahmanical rituals was late. (This is another version of Smashana Kali) This ten armed statue represents India's most extensively worshipped deity goddess Kali, also called Mahakali, or Smashana-Kali. Kali cult and Kali worship prevail in India from a shrine to a cremation ground, from a metropolitan city to a tribal hamlet, from a Brahmin's abode to a Shudra's mud-house and from a sage's hut to a dacoit's hideout. The dark complexioned deity prefers her worship during dark nights inside deep dark chambers, inaccessible recesses of uninhabited deep forests or cremation grounds where sound of cracking woods of a burning pyre alone breaks the silence of death. Kali bestows no bliss but her devotees believe all blissful in life is only her boon and she takes life as sacrifice, dances around burning pyres and consume fresh human blood but to her devotees there is none so benevolent as her in giving life and all that makes it

blissful. To them, she is the most auspicious spiritual presence around wherever they are. In the above diagram you see Kali having Her left leg on Lord Shiva. This is the samhara/ugra/raktha/raktha samhara/kalaratri pose(rupa) of the Kali. DO NOT KEEP THIS PICTURE and do worship, unless guided by a Guru. For your friend, Dakshina Kali (Mayana Kali) is enough. The mantra to be chanted is "Kreem Smashana Kalike Swaha" This is a simple mantra yet it needs initiation from a Guru to become suphala.(Iam not a guru to give a mantra, Ima just giving this for your information only). I will make this email as a posting, I will not mention your name or anything personal here. Jayam Bhavathu Bhavani! Shreeram Balijepalli
