Please what is a " Chalisa " ?

I think it might be a form of prayer but why is it different for other

prayers?

OMNAMONARAYANAYA

Chalis is Hindi for 40. Chalisa is doing something 40 times.

Goswami Tulasidas composed the epic Ramayana with a title RAM CHARITA MANAS.

Ramcharitmanas was composed as Doheh . Doha is a verse with two lines.

Lord Hanuman the disciple and devotee of Lord Sriram was praised in 40 Dohe or

two lined poems. This is called HANUMAN CHALISA.

Reciting Hanuman Chalisa is believed to be an easy way of Prayer and is " wish

fulfilling " .

Devotees are advised to recite HANUMAN CHALISA eleven times a day for 40 days.

My own experience is the first hand proof .During 1976 I had faced a nearly

impossible problem . On advice I recited Hanuman Chalisa eleven times a day for

40 successive days. On the 41st day I received a communication officially that

my problem is solved.

The number 40 is significant in a number of ways. Devotees of Ayyappa Swamy

observe certain austerities for 40 days. Forty days is called a Mandala.

Christians begin their fasting prayers 40 days before Easter and end on Easter.

Muslims observe 40 days of  ritual mourning if bereaved.

Chalisa is a number. It denotes forty.

I do not know exactly when this chalisas started. They were all part

of the Bhakti school when the praise of Gods in langauges other than

Sanskrit started.

There are some famous chalisas. My favourite snd the most well known

is 'Hanuman Chalisa by Sant Tulasidas. It has got 40 couplets in

praise of hanuman. There is one Gayatri Chalisa. May be others too.

May be some members can explain the significance of the number 40.
