what is the correct mantra for chandi/durga?

Namaste! This is the navakshari or Chandi mantra. It can be said with out without pranava at the beginning. The Devi mandir tradition as well as my Guru tradition say it with pranava, but there are other traditions where they do not preface it with the pranava. All depends on the Guru parampara.

 

As for akshara- it is not a matter of opinion- just count the number of syllables.

Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vicce which is the panchakshari durga mantra....is it true?

the mantra of mata maharani is Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vicce but if you want to jaap with om its not going to hram you or even nits increase power of mantra.

That's a very good mantra to Durga in the form of Chamundi. I, however, pray to Mother Durga using the mantra Aum Doom Durgayei Namaha.
