HOLISTIC AYURVEDIC PREGNANCY TIPS

Ayurveda compares the conception to the germination and sprouting of a seed and its transformation into a sapling, When the male and female seeds unite and the soul enters the union, it becomes an embryo (garbha). Ayurveda gives importance to the quality of the seed, and hence, to the development during adolescence. In addition to the female seed, the mother also provides the soil, nutrition and the right season for the seed to grow.

Hence, it advised for special attention the be paid to the nutrition and protection of the woman to keep her (The soil) rich and clean. It further advices that a female under sixteen years of age and male under twenty years of age should not bear child. The age rules of sexual intercourse are also laid down. So also, those of antenatal care : the husband and the other family members are advised to take care of the pregnant woman’s diet and encourage those activities that are dear to her and beneficial to the fetus or child growing in her body .

Thus, the approach towards motherhood i ,e pregnancy and child birth, is a holistic one.

Foetal Development:

First month of pregnancy:

Following the information of the zygote or the embryo, further cellular division takes place and the small mass of cells is formed. This mass grows in size and embeds itself in the uterus. According to Ayurveda the soul and mind enter in the mass of cells and impart life force to it, resulting in further development of the fetus.

Second month of pregnancy :

The fetus begins to attain a definite shape revealing four limbs and the head. The placenta is formed in the third month, which connects the wall of the uterus and the fetus through the rich supply of blood vessels. Sixth and seventh months of pregnancy:

The fetus completes its development and it now resembles a human being in all respects. At this case all the nourishment it derives from the mother goes to improve its health.

If, due to any reason, delivery takes at this time, the baby has good chances of surviving

and becoming normal, through much care and looking after is required.

Eight and nine months of pregnancy

Under the normal condition, delivery takes place at the ends of the nine months. If the labor does not take place at this time, the fetus become mature and grows in size day by day and chances of complications during delivery increase. Normal labor generally comes at this time, failing which the intervention of a surgeon is necessary to assist the lady.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of medicine, has its own special theories regarding the very natural phenomenon of pregnancy. Though we all know that the entire human race is the creation of the union of the male sperm and female ovum, Ayurveda believes that in the course of this union the parents present an opportunity for the soul to attain a baby. It is obvious, therefore, that the Vedic studies consider the time of conception eminent. It holds a coveted position in this respect. It is believed that the only difference in the birth of Devtas and Rakshasas was their time of conception. The offsprings of Kashyap Muni were Devtas when conceived at the auspicious time of dawn and Rakshasas when conceived at dusk.

Astrology advises that on the fourth day of the menstrual period, when the flow has ceased, the lady should purify herself. After a bath with fragrant sandal wood added to the water, after adorning pure white clothes, should she go to meet her husband first thing in the morning.
