Answer: A weak planet is unable to protect /promote its significations. The weak planet also causes delays. If an afflicted planet is strong it gives some tension as per the level of affliction and nature of the afflicting planet. If an afflicted planet is weak the significations of such a weak planet are damaged and lost. Will a strong afflicted planet cause less harm than a weak afflicted? Answer: Certainly, yes. Do functional malefic planets, when not causing afflictions in the chart, never cause any harm? Answer: In their sub periods they cause some tension to the person with the significations of the houses occupied and aspected. Afflicted means- Unfavorably aspected. Loosely applied to: (a) any inharmonious aspect to a planet, or (b) to any aspect, particularly the conjunction, parallel, square or opposition, to a malefic planet. Also by some authorities applied to a mundane or zodiacal parallel with, or when, besieged by both Infortunes (q.v.). Some authorities consider that the sensitive degree on any House cusp can be afflicted, though any such consideration must be confined to instances where the birth-moment is known to a certainty. a planet in a sign contrary to it's nature, as Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio; Mars in Libra, Taurus or Cancer; or Venus in Aries, Virgo or Scorpio; OR with a hard aspect from Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto An afflicted Sun has the reverse of the above qualities, such as arrogance, attention-seeking, insecurity, lack of confidence, and a shaky sense of identity. Poor health and a lack of vitality can also be manifestations of an Unfavorably aspected. In affliction with. Mercury afflicted indicates that the stock markets all over the world will be in recession. Sun afflicted shows that the great politicians of this world will not have mental peace. When Mars is "afflicted" or has many conflicts in a birth chart, it can lead to repressing the vital fire within. But not to be denied, a stifled Mars will eventually erupt, and emerge through temper tantrums or just a lowgrade, but constant irritability. All Mars asks is to be channeled and given an outlet. When your own Mars nature is understood, it's easier to master. It guides you toward making the most of your potential through the use of your own natural assertiveness. A planet is impedited (impeded) in its natural action when afflicted, especially by malefics, or is in a general state of weakness due to position or lack of dignity.
