Mr. Kumar,

It seems that you and your friends were the only one concerned about

my dry story and decided to take on the role of the class-room monitor

in this instance as you have tried to in the past a few times, trying

to control what I should write and what people should post and so on.

I do not think that is within your mandate as a contributor on this or

any other forum! Please keep to what you do best and if my style or

substance rub you the wrong way, or rattle your cage -- please refrain

from reading what I post (repeated for the Nth time and I will

continue till the message sinks in!).

Good one Rohiniji!

Ironically/interestingly, Geeta (one who posted the query in the first place) has not raised any objection/dismay/displeasure at your feedback, to the best of my knowledge. It is the self appointed police/advisory board/pro bono lawyers/guardian angels doing the talk! What these people have (deliberately?) overlooked is the significance of your explicitly expressed empathy and implicitly hinted possible conscious/ subconscious/ supraconscious reasons behind the sneaky dreams, I mean snake dreams :-)

On a conscious level, snake dream could stem from one's personal encounter with an actual snake, as you have mentioned in your response. ANY experience PERCEIVED as life-threatening one, can haunt dreams that might fade with time, since this directly deals with memory. As you said, the fact that man is more cruel when it comes to survival, should take care of the 'logic' of fear (oxymoron?)

On a subconscious level, as Carl Jung suggested, snake dream is a motiff belonging to the human 'archetype'; meaning the experience is universal, cutting across culture, gender, age, time and space. This explains why someone in Manhattan downtown is more afraid of snakes (statistically insignificant threat) than other significant threats such as road accident etc. BTW, snake could mean a lot depending on spiritual, scientific etc. PREDISPOSITION of the INDIVIDUAL (which is not known about Ms. Geeta); it can even lead to a serendipitous discovery (Kekule's dream of snake swallowing its tail- closed loop of benzene molecular structure)

On a supraconscious level, Rahu is indicated, perhaps; you have more than hinted at this in your response. You have mentioned about Mahakaal as well. It follows that appesing/worshipping Rahu/Mahakaal is a good idea!

Sharing stories (&empathizing) is a nice and perhaps most effective way of getting a point across, many a time. Talk about epics on (a)dharma and parables of great religious leaders!

All the same, like you said, it is an individual that decides which way he/she wants to help the other person...

Dear Sree Ven ji,

At the risk of being sent to the corner of the class and made to stand

in the 'chicken posture', I would like to add two elements that came

to me as I was reading your thoughtful and supportive posting.

The Story of Genesis and the Garden of Eden where Devil came to Eve in

the form of a serpant and showed the Apple of Wisdom!

And the Hindu scriptural account of Vasuki, the Divine Serpant who was

engaged to carry out the Samudra manthan, a process that symbolically

has represented Deep Psychoanalysis of the Creation and which brought

forth all the gems of wisdom and power!

The Two allegories from the west (middle-east actually!) and east show

the strong association of Snakes with wisdom, with the opening of eyes

and imparting wisdom! Two ancient cultures and their scriptures could

not be wrong! And I am sure there must be similar associations in

other cultures and religions too!

Rahu and Ketu are associated with snakes and despite their association

with Asuras -- generally considered less in station than Devas in

terms of beauty of form or of knowledge and wisdom/intellect, surely

were different! They did manage to receive the amrita while other

asuras were enamoured by the Mohini Murti! Perhaps Rahu and Ketu must

not be underestimated for they could manage to see through Lord

Vishnu's Charm and that is no mean feat!

Now this does not mean that I am implying that rahu and ketu, willy

nilly would represent wisdom, or opening of one's eyes and all those

good qualities that Snakes (some snakes!) may have been attributed with!

I hope I am not rattling anyone's cage by my postings. I have a true

reverance for rattle snakes none of which were seen in a dream or two

but in real 'shows' in South Dakota in U.S.A. once.

There used to be a saying in rural Bengal, my Late Mother used to

relate that sticks in my mind. A dream of snakes as an omen, sometimes

indicates that the dreamer or a close relative will have a child soon.

I have never followed that up as a validation exercise so do not know

for sure.
