Calamus/Vacha to stop addictions

Hi,

I would like to help a client of mine stop a life long habit of marijuana

smoking. I have read a little about adding calamus/vacha into the actual

marjuana before rolling the mix but need much more detailed

information....

Does anyone know if smoking calamus with the marijuana would in fact be

appropriate? If so how much and should they take the root or powder.

Could I perhaps accomplish the same thing with the client taking a vacha

tincutre?

I have also heard that if you are not ready to stops smoking cold turkey

that the calamus can actually make you sick if you do toke again.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

jennifer

hi jennifer

i wouldn't recommend smoking calamus at all

with the high essential oil content it would be very irritating to

the mucus membranes

calamus already has a tikshna property, used in nasya, as a snuff or

even chewed to restore consciousness and clear/activate the mind

plus, its a fairly heating herb and so is cannabis, and we should be

cautious not to overheat the mind

also, be aware that the asian calamus has unacceptably high levels of

the liver carcinogen beta asarone, and in chronic drug users you

don't want to be risking further liver damage - if you still wanted

to use it internally i would go with north american calamus - i cover

this issue in detail in my book

in terms of a harm reduction strategy the first and most effective

thing to be done is to find a way to extract the cannabis so it

doesn't have to be smoked, because smoking is the first concern

vaporizers etc are better but even still function to cause a cloud of

smoke-borne resins to plaster the lungs

so, an oil or alcohol extract that could be consumed orally is a

better choice

in some folks, eating it before bed allows enough of the active

ingredient to be in their system during the next day, so they don't

get the desire - but in some cases it might interfere with sleep (in

others not)

other than that, cold-turkey is the way to go - usually a pot smoker

has so much THC stored in their system that even for weeks afterwards

it affects their neurochemistry as the drug is liberated from storage

and then metabolized

i find that just a few days of abstinence is enough to show a pot

smoker that the quality of their life really doesn't change all that

much (i.e. some people use it to intensify experiences, to make them

more enjoyable) - however, when the drug is finally out of their

system 3-5 weeks later, a craving may occur to take it again

with herbal treatment throughout this period you can ameliorate the

craving and supply the body with the life energy/ojas that truly

makes like enjoyable, and therefore deal with the underlying issue

which is the regulation of emotional and psychic energy

among the best herbs for addiction tincture of milky oats

i based on signs/sx i would combine with herbs such as skullcap,

camalus, brahmi, mandukaparni, reishi, licorice, aswagandha, american

ginseng etc

as far as calamus making the person sick, i haven't observed this and

further, the chemistry of cannabis and calamus are very different,

not like lobelia and tobacco, which former of which will definitely

make you you sick, and is very similar to tobacco in terms of

chemistry (i.e. lobeline vs nicotine)

also, a good supplement regimen is a great idea, with a focus on Bs

and multiminerals

as far as diet, i find that pot artificially induces a carb

preference, which becomes part of a vicious cycle relationship to

maintain energy balance, i.e. the cannabis acts as a stimulant, but

exhausts the system, requiring an immediate "fill up" of energy in

the form of rapidly digesting carbs, and cannabis is then used to

stimulate a bloated, overloaded digestion

lastly, a cannabis user typically needs to change their associations

and spend time with non-smoking friends

habits can be hard to break, and enabling relationships don't help

hope this is helpful...
