Dear Kanishk,

Rahu and Ketu are called Moon's nodes in western astrology. They are mathematical entities, calculated around Sun and Moon's apparent paths around earth, which when coincide, produce eclipses.

The story about Vishnu cutting off Rahu's head has been told in Hindu mythology to explain the nature of Rahu and Ketu. It is not a real story.

The eclipses have created awe and horror in all cultures since the beginning of human civilizations. Every culture had devised ways to calculate eclipses.

It is very interesting that you have asked this question when Moon is with Rahu in transit.

Regards,

Ashutosh

The best way to explain Rahu / Ketu is to use eclipses.

Lunar Eclipses always happen on a full moon (Poornima) day and solar eclipses always happen on a new moon (Amavasya) day.

In Jyotisha Full Moon day is when the Sun and Moon are exactly 180degree apart and New Moon is when Sun and Moon are zero degrees apart or together.

Considering Lunar eclipses on full moon days - Rahu and Ketu who are already 180 degrees apart align themselves along with Sun and Moon.

Rahu covers up Sun and Ketu covers up Moon. ( I believe they can vice versa as well)

So basically Rahu and Ketu 180 degrees apart are the points of the straight line that join the Sun, Rahu, "Earth", Ketu and Moon when all of them are in the same horizontal plane.

Again not all Full moon days cause lunar eclipse - so there is involvement of a horizontal plane - they have to be in the same plane. The subject of eclipses to be explained thru Jyotisha is quite complex - but if you reflect on this you should get a good idea.

Rahu and Ketu are considered as planets and have their independent significance as well.

I am Mesha lagna and mesha rasi bharani nakshatra.
