Guest guest
Dear Pt Tata and Chandrashekarji, Namaste!!! I don't know about the arguement, BUT, I do know about prices of Lakshmi Shank. I got small 40 gram Lakshmi Shank and it cost Rs. 3,000 per gram (delivered in Bangkok). A similar shank is availab on Tata's site for over Rs. 11,000 per gram. I don't quite understand the price difference, unless someone, or too many people are taking profit. Last I heard John Ravi was increasing his price to a huge Rs. 9,600 per gram. In the beginning of this forum we were told that Rs. 1,000 per gram was the right price. So, why the BIG INCREASE??? Is this gouging? I paid a LOT for mine according to the members of this Group in the start of this group. But now you have a shank just like mine (except mine is better quality) BUT the price is more than I paid by 4 fold!?? Also, on the "polished" shanks WHAT IS THE BIG UGLY SCAR RUNNING THE LENGTH of both of your samples??? I'm interested, VERY !!! ??? Guest guest
Dear Richardji, Re the prices: Last year the price of my flat was Rs.22 lacks. Now it is Rs.46 lacks. 8 years ago a fellow offered me a genuine Ekamukhi Rudraksha for 11000 rupees and I dint buy. Today it is 7.5 lacks. I am not an economist but I guess the market demand and supply forces have something to do with it. No one likes increasing the prices as it is not easy to sell at higher prices. Regarding ""on the "polished" shanks WHAT IS THE BIG UGLY SCAR RUNNING THE LENGTH of both of your samples???"" – I am surprised you find it ugly. I find it a rare beautiful design – of the last circle on the conch head curving down to the bottom – exactly like in the picture of the Mohenjo-daro & Harappa excavations as you can see here > http://www.astrojyoti.com/shankhaworshipinharappa.htm A very interesting repeat after 3000 years right? Finally, I am most interested to know how such a blasphemously insulting remark against a forum member was allowed to be posted in a moderator controlled forum!! Guest guest
Dear mr richard, It was not johnravi who increased the price for valampuri, it was the people who is doing the fake valampuri increased the price for the real valampuri. As they fought in the market with me in buying real valampuri and when they finally could not buy, they raised the price of real valampuri and started doing fake valampuri. Is it possible for you to fix the price for real valampuri by size or can you give your valampuri for the price of 3000/gm. moreover i dont want to earn money by selling valampuri for high price for my living, i have my own conch factory in calcutta for the past 25years holding the stock of 6lacs pcs to 10lac pieces anytime started by my father which gives me good earning and good name. Valampuri is rare pieces which no one can get according to their wish, when it comes similiar to their wish we are ready to buy that at any price, at that time we dont see the price, we just see that our dreams comes true and buy that. I started selling valampuri for 600/gm and even now i sell valampuri for the 600/gm if it is damaged or had bubble in it. I am very happy myself and trueful to god for selling real and rare valampuri for 10000/gm than many people sell their fake for 3000/gm. if Anyone can prove that i have sold fake valampuri i am ready to leave this business. .Valampuri is bought by people for pooja purpose and they feel it is the lakshmi staying with them, i feel it is better buying and selling them for high price than selling fake valampuri. I am going on my own way without disturbing others even when i know person who are selling the fake for high price. If anyone want to spoil my name and want to create problems sure i am ready to face them. thanking you john ravi Find out what India is talking about on - Answers India Send FREE SMS to your friend's mobile from Messenger Version 8. Guest guest
Dear Chandrashekar, Namaste!!! Are you the owner of these shanks in question? Best wishes, Richard Respected Shri. Richard ji, Thank you very much for your mail. In connection with pricing, it all depend on various factors and I would write about it seperately very soon. Prices are decided by traders and there is no control over it. In case of Polished Shankhas, Gem Quality 318 and 198, there are no ugly scars running length wise but are beautiful light pink coloured bands running length wise. I have a beautiful similar piece which shows inside-out light pink coloured bands. I will post it in my Valampuri album on 'sacred objects forum' very soon. It is mentioned in the Skanda Purana that Conch shell having horizontal line on its back surface is more auspicious. The link is www.salagram.net. Following is the description given there in para no. 4 of the link. According to Skanda-purana, the sacred conch-shell must be dazzling white in colour, like cow’s milk, and must have a long neck and broad body; it must be long in the front portion. When blown, it should emit a long, loud and sonorous sound like ‘om’. On the back of it, there must be a long central line. The right convoluted shell is meritorious Is this 'line on back' mentioned in the Skanda Purana is equivalent to the coloured bands seen on some Valampuri and Idampuri varieties ? The High Quality 128 and 136 gms Valampuri's show beautiful saffron coloured conch lip. High Quality 240 gms. Valampuri has a excellent light golden yellow coloured silky luster. It also has two light pink coloured bands running lengthwise. This type of Valamuri is also rare and is popularly known as 'Suvarna Kanti Lakshmi Shankh' ( with Golden Skin). The 'Ashta Lakshmi Valampuries' also show light coloured bands running lengthwise and they are natural. In many Idampuries also such pink or light orange coloured bands are seen. No. of such lines differ from one to four. 'Ashta Lakshmi Valampuri' has 8 sutures. Conch lip of 414 and 876 is well elevated and shows the presence of periostrachum in its folds externally. It is dirty grey in colour if you notice. Elevated lip character is a diagnostic character of the variety 'napus'. i.e. Turbinella pyrum variety napus also known as Great Andaman Conch. All the polished Valampuries i.e. 128, 136, 240, 318 and 198 are of the species Turbinella pyrum variety pyrum. In case of this variety, conch lip is not well elevated like in case of napus. Conch lip is on the conch surface. When conches are collected from the sea they all have a dirty olivaceous green to gray covering scientifically known as 'Periostrachum'. It is of the conch protein called as 'Conchin'. Function of 'Periostrachum' is to protect conch from any minor fractures. It acts as a binding covering and helps conch animal to retain the conch in the course of repairing of fracture. The animal repairs its minor fractures. There is a belief in the South India that Valampuries with this cover or 'Periostrachum' are auspicious. I have seen fake Valampuries with artificial Periostrachum made from algae and synthetic adhesives. Customers are fooled by such Valampuries with cover. Not only in our country but in western countries fake sinistral conches of different varieties are made and to give natural look, fake periostrachum is pasted on it. In case of gastropoda there is much variation. It is mentioned in the literature that only 40% of our Sea Fauna is discovered and still 60% of our Sea Fauna is a challenge to marine biiologists. New genera and new species are described regularly from the Sea. We all know that life originated from the sea. Few people and traders become emotional when they consider only certain type of Valampuries are only the true Valampuries criticising rest of the all variations as so called 'Fake'. I agree that such people do not have scientific background and do not know about variations. I have therefore posted a link to show tremendous variation under the genus Turbinella from a world reputed link on gastropods. Turbinella pyrum is mainly located in the Indian sea. Its localities are near Adam's bridge, Eastern coast of India, bay of Bengal and near Okha and Karachi. Conches collected from different localities always show morphological differences which we call as ecotypes. Conch lovers abroad always insist on the correct locality and depth at which conches are collected. These conch lovers also insist on topographical details. I have a question. If we get any sinistral specimen from any of these species or varieties or totally new species, described under the genus Turbinella are we going to treat them as Fake ? I have collected a new species under the genus Turbinella and will be published in a year or two. Thanking you and with regards, Chandrashekhar Phadke Richard Shaw-Brown <rsbj66 > wrote: Dear Pt Tata and Chandrashekarji, Namaste!!! Guest guest
Dear Sri Chandrashekar, Namaste!!! Thanks for writing explaination. I was wondering, Are you the owner of these shanks in question? Can you show me proof of ownership and identity? I can show proof of ownership of my Valampuri. Anyone can put a photo of a Rolls Royce car belonging to another person on the Internet, and asking price of one million dollars, and some fool might buy it. Then the real owner gets his real price and the broker reaps a windfall. All based on finding a fool to over pay. My question is why don't you have your own business of Valampuri, and your own web site? Why do you need brokers?? Thanks in advance.
