Guest guest Report post Posted August 29, 2006 Dear Members, I would appreciate somebody can expalin the significance of punarpooja that is prescribed in all the pooja books for some of the pooja e.g vinayaka churthi. 1. Why is it prescribed only for some pooja? 2. what is the philosophy (if any) behind it? Thanks, Ravi Salem
Guest guest Report post Posted August 30, 2006 Namaste. First of all, it is 'punah pooja' and not 'punarpooja' as it is commonly called, because the visarga at the end of punah does not become 'r' when the next letter is 'p'. It remains as visarga. It is to be pronounced as punafpooja. When we invoke (do Avaahana) on a temporary image made for the particular pooja we have to do udvaasana , i.e. cancelling the invocation at the end of the pooja or the next day, since we will not be worshipping it again. But before doing the udvaasana we worship the deity again. This is punafpooja. At the end of the punafpooja we pray to the deity to come again (punar aagamanaaya cha), just as we tell guests to our house when they leave.. The image then becomes just an image and no more a deity. Punah pooja is not necessary when we are using the same image permanently for the pooja everyday. In Srichakra, Devi is considered to be always present and so neither specific invocation nor udvaasana is necessary. After mangala nirAnjana, maNtra pushpa, prasannArghya, pradakshiNa namaskAra, prarthana etc. we do punaf pUja by reciting maNtra-s like pUjAnte chatraM dhArayAmi, chAmaraM vIjayami, nrutyaM darshayAmi, gItam shrAvayAmi etc. etc. and then finally we offer everything to almighty...by saying bhagavan sarvAtmakaH sarvaM sri........arpaNamastu...etc...So, in our saMpradAya, punafpUja is a part of nitya dEvatArchana & shOdashOpachAra pUja. Hari Hari Hari Bol!!! bhaskar
