Guest guest Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 Dear All, FYI: Carat of gems weight is 5 cts = one gram / Karat of gold purity is based on percent of pure gold in a mix, e.g., 75% gold = 18K, or 90% gold = 21k, and 100% gold = 24K --- Carat weight, and Karat purity are different words. Guest guest Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 --- FOR EXAMPLE OF 18K YELLOW GOLD THIS MIGHT CONSIST 75% PURE 24K GOLD, + 20% Copper, + 5% Zink, in otherwords, to get a kilo of 18k gold you mix togther 750 grams of pure 24k gold + 200 grams of copper/nickle + 50 grams of zink = 1000 grams of 18k gold. When the mix is 90% of gold then the final is 21k gold, etc. When there is only pure 24k gold, unmixed with anything, that is called 24k (99.99% pure).
