Here ophthalmologist say : do not use any home-made filters, including candle-sooted glass. Only special glass with some... cobalt stuff ? ... This is very important. Because it is not the problem to look to a common Sun disk. You can look only for a short time. But, with eclipse, when the main light effulgence is covered, we can watch directly to the Sun, but our iris is wide open ! It tells us that there is no harming light, but the point is that it does not recognize the IR and other radiation, which we normally never will be tempted to look at. And these radiations are not much reduced by the eclipse. Any watching to the eclipse longer than 3 sec would cause the burns on the area close to the yellow spot. This is public info. It is recommended that children are kept inside, animals also, because they might went blind. They even joke that this year will be easy for hunters, since most of the rabbits will be blind. So, even for filters, you can reduce the light radiation, but they still do not make your iris safely closed. ys Miodrag
