It appears that those who did better were run by householders - preferrably with their own children - and not by renunciates (I know the NT gurukula is/was run primarily by mothers). Another feature was that the parents were usually close by. E.g. in NT many lived about 45 minutes away in the New Orleans temple and saw their children every weekend. It started as a full fledged boarding school for children from all over northern Europe, but is today a government credited day school. There has been at least one abuse case at Almvik, but it may not have been in the gurukula. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Almvik did OK. Like New Talavan, it's another example of a school in the midst of a householder community. It would be an interesting project for someone to classify the gurukulas according to amount and type of abuse (inc. "none") that occurred there and then compare their other characteristics (e.g. contact with parents, training and supervision of teachers, type of community...) to see if any factors can be systematically identified which were associated with child abuse vs protection. That could be helpful for anyone who may want to set up a school in the future and would be a guide to parents evaluating schools for their children.
