People are writing whole books with answers to your questions. In other

words, your questions cannot be answered with a few sentences.

It all depends on what your original is, on what flatbed scanner you have,

on how good your printer is, and on how high expectations you have in

regards of quality.

There are a couple of flatbed scanners which work well enough, provided you

have a 'good' reflective original. And there are many flatbed scanners you

would not use for scanning in a picture for a book cover.

If your original is a transparency, forget all flatbed scanners except the

Scitex Smartscan.

How can you check the quality? Scan and fix it up in Photoshop or a similar

program and output to a digital proofing system such as IRIS or RAINBOW, or

have a repro studio produce films and a CROMALIN or MATCHPRINT proof print.

How many images are you planning to scan? If it's just a few, just give

them to a repro studio and have them scanned on their drum scanners. Saves

you a lot of time and costs.
