no sleep during Devi Bhava

Now on Devi Bhava nights Amma does not want people to sleep during

the program (either at the program or in their rooms) and then to

come back for darshan in the morning. Makes sense, the staff says

its a bit disrespectful to Amma, and can't we at least make an

effort for one night? Amma's doing this all the time. Again here an

example where Amma wants us to make AN EFORT.

Of course this gets controversial because everyones got an excuse,

legitimate or otherwise. Enforcing this at the door becomes a total

pain in the butt.

Now those are early nights!  HA!  I remember falling asleep before 1

AM at my first Bhava.  Up in the loft of the barn in New Hampshire.

Mother came to me in a dream and woke me up so I wouldn't miss the

end.

i could imagine that it would be difficult to "enforce" at the door

unless you can read minds...and then what do you say? "nope you can't

come in and get darshan cause you had a nice little nappy, while the

rest of us slaved!"

or "Were you just sleeping until now? nope no darshan for you!"

or maybe you just try and let Amma take care of it....and find

yourself in a little hot water later...uh huh, sounds like fun..

in my own case i found that the best way to stay up for the entire

Devi Bhava darshan, without feeling tired at all (until it is over) is

to volunteer in the seva department, perhaps handing out the mantra

brochures or some other line seva...the night just flies away under

those circumstances...and suddenly, before you know it...the last

folks are filing through the line, and you can go for your own

darshan, at the end of it all...(of course the last time that Amma

allowed me to come and see Her was in 2001...and things might have

changed...but that's how it was for me up til then.) if i just wanted

to sit around and admire Amma, i would find myself nodding off quite

early...so the best solution in my understanding is work, work,

work...Seva Seva Seva...not only that but it's kind of fun to do the

work too...

anyways...just my two cents worth...if it's worth even that much...

Maybe this is cheating, but the way I do it now is to skip the Atma Puja and come to DB around 11pm, after a little nap. This helps me stay awake until morning. It started when I saw how many newcomers have to sit outside for the first several hours of DB, and I figured that since I had been to so many Atma Pujas, and have plenty of holy water, I should let somebody else be inside the hall. Of course I ended up napping during that time, which made the rest of the evening much easier, because I refuse to sleep inside the hall. Now I do this at almost every DB, although I do stay for at least one Atma Puja on the tour, usually in a smaller city like Seattle.

Amma has never directly chided me for this. I do wish I could stay up all night like GeorgeSon and others, but major back problems and sleep disorders make it oh so painful, and just a few hours rest makes all the difference in the world.

When you said that you have not seen Amma since 2001, then it made

sense why you are asking this q.

Around 2004, Amma has been insisting that we stay awake during the

entire DB, especially the Brahma-muhurta time (approx 4 am) as it is

a terrific time to chant our mantra or do guru-seva in the guru's

presence.  .... makes a lot of sense to me.

The way the sevites enforce this is the tough part... not consistent

across the tour, and policies are still eveolving. They get a lot of

flak for this (poor guys!), particularly because I believe they are

all doing their best what Amma has told them directly or indirectly.

In Nov2004@Detroit (Ypsilanti Marriott), it was kind of taken for

granted that a person coming from outside at say 5 am into the hall

was sleeping and coming. I think they did let in many of these

eventually but with look of displeasure on their faces. if you were

inside and went out for a moment and came in, then you needed to

have a special patch at exit and surrender it at re-entry.

one good thing they did was to keep this checkpost beyond the food

stalls and the rest rooms, just close to the lobby (the hotel

residents and outside people came in from here).

But you may not get such a great arrangement in every tour stop.

As I said, it's not a good time for the sevites or the people being

rejected, but I have faith in Amma and I am glad she is doing this

as I also think it's time that she got harder with her devotees to

make them grow up faster.

I for one definitely need to grow some more. Last Nov in San Ramon

(my daughter's letter-writing ceremony), I slept in the hall for 2

hours (5am - 7 am). My wife (who is not particularly a devotee and

who loves to sleep!) stayed awake the whole night for the first time

in her life! Clearly, I need more discipline and I welcome Amma's

blows - I just hope and pray I can take it well!

Jai Ma!

I've never been able to stay up all night. Never in my life. We all have

different constitutions. Now that I am among the very ill it is a really

good way to make myself bedridden for an indefinite period of time.

Guess no more Devi Bhavas for this child.

That's what I did in Michigan this year....incidentally, the only time Amma has foiled my

EVERY attempt to do seva and allowed me to get the rest I needed instead. It was almost

comical! When things get that absurd, I always know Amma's got her hand in the pot.  ;-D

In general, I agree with others that seva is the best way to stay energized through Devi

Bhava. However, I've learned for me, personally, that I cannot stay up all night for two tour

stops in a row, without serious consequences (as a result of a weakened immune system

from Lyme disease). Anyway, I think resting, arriving late and giving others a chance to

experience the Atma puja is a good compromise for people with some physical limitations.

Blessings,

Iswari

LOL! Yes, it's amazing how She will make us rest if we must rest, and stay up if we must stay up. I remember seeing her strongly admonish one devotee (I won't name names) with health issues for staying up too late in LA. He refused to go to bed, like a little child, it was very sweet, with Mother telling him to go sleep!

I remember Amma saying in a Q&A once (several years ago) that she sometimes "puts her children to sleep," so that their minds will shut down and they can better accept the "surgery." But she said that the area closer to the stage should be only for awake and present devotees (i.e. we shouldn't leave our asanas, etc. around if we are not coming right back, make room for devotees who want to be close).

So many times I've seen huge portions of the floor space near the stage filled with snoozing devotees and kids, all stretched out with blankets and pillows for most of the evening, feet pointing at Amma. Often they are newcomers, but sometimes not! In San Ramon there is always a huge group of sleeping people on the balcony, I often wonder if maybe there could just be a designated resting area somewhere outside of the hall for kids and parents or weary touring devotees who just can't hang in there any longer. It would sure free up space inside the hall, but would maybe encourage people to just sleep all night and get up in the morning for the petals, which is obviously not what Amma wants us to do. But what to do with all those tuckered-out kids? I always fret over my step-daughter, Sammy, sleeping on the balcony with so many people coming and going and stepping over her little head. It would be a nice seva for an adult to watch over a children's sleeping area, at least,

so they wouldn't be underfoot.

In general, I agree with others that seva is the best way to stay energized through Devi

Bhava. However, I've learned for me, personally, that I cannot stay up all night for two tour

stops in a row, without serious consequences (as a result of a weakened immune system

experience the Atma puja is a good compromise for people with some physical limitations.

i could imagine that it would be difficult to "enforce" at the door

in my own case i found that the best way to stay up for the entire

to volunteer in the seva department, perhaps handing out the mantra

brochures or some other line seva...the night just flies away under

AT San Ramon, it seems the entire hall becomes one big sleeping zone.  Its like an Indian train station, smells included (especially on the balcony).

Amma used to make us wake everyone up.  That was not a fun job!

I remember during my last Devi Bhava, I stepped on someones hair by accident. She was

fast asleep in between the chairs about 2 rows from Amma and covered in a blanket,

virtually invisible. I felt so bad, but she didn't make it any better by screaming and yelling

at me and shooting me nasty looks for the rest of the evening. Perhaps this is another

reason why people should not be sleeping in the temple....accidental injury!! :)

Manoj,

Who told you that Amma said this?  I believe that this was/is a rumor, though it is good advice.

Being awake during the Brahma Muhurta was never any part of the reason why She didn't want people to GO LEAVE AND SLEEP and then come back.  I was right there when this started.  Since Bhavani was/is in charge of the all, all instruction came directly from Amma to her and then to any of us who were recruited to help "enforce" this.

The reasons given were two:

1.  If people leave and go sleep and then come back, when will the Bhava end?  It will pretty much never end.  Amma's going 12-18 hrs straight as it is.

2.  Amma didn't want people leaving the energy of the hall and then coming back.  She said, it the energy of the Bhava just kept building and building and it is lost by leaving the hall to do other things, especially sleep.  That was why in many hotels and sites, you weren't even allowed outside the hall itself, except with just cause (usually to do with Seva and then requiring a pass).  It got VERY strict in Boston last year.  Of course it depended on the space, where the bathrooms were, etc.  In Boston, the bathrooms were in the hall.

How strictly this has been enforced has varied from place to place and with the people around. The directions have varied as well.  Truth is, I felt I was the WORST at this job.  I didn't want to turn people away.  I guess I'm just a big softie.  But I think it is a good policy.

When this started happening, sleeping in the hall became fine.  I never personally liked this either, except for kids, elderly and people who were sick/had medical conditions, but its not my business to judge what others are doing.  Also the sleeping right by the stage and pointing the feet at Amma, really hit me hard.  I felt so bad and sad about it.  Also there have been times when so many people come and sit right in front of the Swamis and musicians.  Sometimes it happens in a slow, encroaching kind of a way.  The problem is that once the people are there like that, the Swamis won't request them to move.  Big Swamiji has said to me that if he requested it, people might have hurt feelings and he didn't want to incur the karma of that.  So the entire front just filled up with people.  Some even fell asleep.

Once back in the early 90s, I remember sitting kind of "first row" off to the right of the singers, up in San Ramon.  I was exhausted.  I foolishly closed my eyes to "meditate" during a nice bhajan, and of course drifted off.  Amma had Dayamrita, who was Raj Shekar back then, personally come up to me and wake me up and convey a few words to me like, "who is this xxxxxx boy that just sits up close and goes to sleep right in front of me?  Who does he think he is?"  I'm slightly paraphrasing, but not much--only on what I can't remember exactly.  Lets just say I'm much, much more careful about this since then.  Its really tough sometimes!

Jai Maa!

Surya

Jai Ma!

ONe more note on this...it was always fine to sleep during the beginning and to come in much later.  That time varied upon the hall.  The darshan token cut off was another thing.  Usually 12 midnight was the average cut off for that.

I've never been able to stay up all night. Never in my life. We all have

good way to make myself bedridden for an indefinite period of time.

Guess no more Devi Bhavas for this child.

it may have been AMMA through you that stepped on HER head and also AMMA

through her who screamed at you the rest of the night...AMMA says HER main

concern is HER childrens spiritual growth.when someone screams at us ,it is

an oppurtunity for us to forgive and to most importantly forget...it also

helps us to see what areas we need to grow in...

if you are open to see it such as this ,you actually could be thankful for

your screaming sister ,for she in her screams gave you and oppurtinity to

grow spiritually....... so in ESSENCE ,even if she wasnt aware of it ,your

beloved sisters even in her yelling was helping matters.....

One of the few Devi Bhavas this child was able to attend was in 2000 in

San Rafael. There were people dancing and jumping  in a frenzy in the

back of the hall, and very close to them were little kids sound asleep.

I just figured it was Mother's sankalpa that kept someone from being

seriously hurt.  People were sound asleep in the strangest places -

either they just fell over or the crowd moved, but there were people

sleeping where a lot of people were walking, etc. Kids sleeping with their

heads sticking out in the aisles, etc.

I also think that perhaps it is Mother's sankalpa that people don't

become sick from the radiation on the beaches near the Amritapuri

ashram. and that her sankalpa allows people to survive on the ashram diet.

AMMAs sun would like to share something.this child believes that the ESSENCE

of AMMA saying to stay awake during DEVI BHAVA is simply to "STAY AWAKE",as

in AWAKEN CHILDREN...could SHE perhaps be saying to increase our AWARENESS

of what is actually happening, or is SHE saying to actually saying to keep

our bodys up?.....the message of this may resonate differently to each

persons mind, however, in the HEART of the matter once again ,it is our

MOTHER challenging us to contemplate and go deeper.once again SHE is loving

us and being most concerned with HER darling childrens spiritual growth..

AMMAs sun has learned through HER LOVE that their is always a simple

spiritual message underneath the complicated one....

this message is not a new one from AMMA.AMMA has been saying the this for

years.."AWAKEN MY DARLING children.... from the deepest love of this heart

AMMAs sun prays that AMMA is pleased with what this child has shared with

his brothers and sisters....love you........

Surya,

I am never so upclose to Amma that she tells me anything of value

regarding the program et al; the only time she talks to me directly

is when I go for darshan. and that too she talks to me in Tamil even

though Geeta or the other lap-seva coordinators tell her I am

malayalee! Here is the best part - I respond in malayalam because I

dont speak Tamil although I understand it somewhat! she speaks to my

wife in malayalam though. leelas!

I heard the below from a Michigan tour seva coordinator (name not

important) who told me Amma wants people to have the darshan of Guru

during BrahmaMuhurta time (the best sattvic time of the day for any

sadhana) and sustain the energy, that is very efficacious for mantra

chanting or seva etc.

This is my input: Even "plain" darshan (meaning sight of the guru)

in that time can be of more value FOR US at that time than at other

times.

It may be the surgeon's kind, cruel cut that Amma is playing out

with this. seemingly cruel but infintely kind in helping us ground

ourselves better and faster in our sadhana.

I don't think it's a rumor; the lady is built of better character

than spreading rumors.

Interesting.  Maybe She said this later on or maybe that was just the input of the coordinator or someone who conveyed it to her.  People sometime innocently add their own twist, not meaning to start a rumor.  But I like to be exacting when we are talking about what Amma said or did not say.

I just never heard this at any of the programs this has been implemented in.  I did not attend Michigan the last two years though.

But I can say that this was never stated as an original reason, and was not stated on the 2005 summer tour nor at San Ramon last Nov.

that is the beauty of acceptance...we dont have to see or to understand

,only accept.you may not see ,however ,perhaps someone else may benifit from

what you cannot.please forgive this child if you were disturbed by his

sharing ....that my beloeved sister is what is most important ,when we are

disturbed... forgiveness.. AMMAs sun believes our ultimate goal should be

to always come back to spiritual principals. spiritual principles are

always relevant..

it is because of spirtual pricipals not being inetergrated in our

discussions that this world has decreased in dharma...this can happen in

spiritul circles as well....AMMAs sun prays that AMMA is pleased with what

he has shared....

Namah Shivaya.

Yayyyy, dear Brother!

Seva Seva Seva instead of sleep, sleep sleep.

If everyone will pitch in with some help, we'll all feel so fresh when She

showers us with Her Devi charged honey petals.

So do be sure and go to the seva desk and ask what what they need, or just

volunteer to replace someone who's been standing there for hours who might

appreciate a bathroom break or chance to grab a snack.

Dear Brother, you and your beloved or on the hall seva team for Toronto and

will be contacting you soon, by Amma's grace.

In Her,

premarupa
