Guest guest Report post Posted October 12, 2004 > There is one canakya sloka which often misued. > > It is something about beating a drum, beating a woman.. > I wonder if anyone has that sloka. I cannot find it. I saw it once and > it was not at all as it is generally misquoted.. It did say beating a > drum, but the others were different.. There is nothing in Canakya's Niti-sastra about beating a drum or a wife, but since he obviously got most of his maxims from Brhaspati's Niti-sara, from the Garuda Purana, I checked there and did find in 1.109.31: "Wicked persons, artisans, slaves, defiled ones, drums and women are softened by being beaten; they do not deserve gentle handling." Note: this is a translation by J.L. Shastri (Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd. 1978, 1990 / ISBN: 81-208-0344-2 Vol. I). I cannot say anything about the accuracy of the translation or its proper context.
