Nobody really knows how people get it and how it is cured. Initially topical creams are applied on the patches if it is only in a few places. If it is widespread, you will have to resort to steroids as well as drugs like Methotrexate and/or what is called UV Treatment where the skin is exposed to UVA or UVB light. Go to a good Skin Specialist. He will guide you and also help decide which treatment is best suited for your condition. Lifestyle changes are also important. Stop alcohol, stop Non Vegetarian food, increase intake of salads, try to nurse your liver ( Chk the Liver SGOT and SGPT readings - If they are high, bring it down to sub 40 levels ) Take Omega 3 fatty acids capsules one a day, REDUCE STRESS by regular meditation and PRAY sincerely daily. When Psoriasis is widespread, it is a real nuisance and one becomes very frustrated. But IT WILL VANISH with good treatment. The key is to find a good skin specialist who knows Psoriasis management. Most importantly, PRAY TO GOD. The truth is that even Doctors know very little about the disease. They know maybe 5 % more than we do ! Even in the West, researchers know that it is caused by T Cells which multiply rapidly in 3-4 days (instead of the usual 28 day skin cycle) this causes the skin to multiply one on top of the other on the surface hence causing the patches. The research now on is how to retain these T Cells in the blood itself without it reaching the skin surface and hence causing the skin to proliferate. It will take 5 years (Maybe longer) for a breakthrough. Sometimes Doctors themselves are surprised when it gets cured ! There are still some things which are beyond the realm of science ! That is where GOD comes in !!! so PRAY PRAY PRAY ! Pl. note that even when the skin becomes normal again, Psoriasis will come back anytime within 6 months to 3 years. The period when you are normal is called REMISSION. Again nobody knows the extent to which you will get another "attack". It could be mild, it could be severe. Nobody knows. But again it will vanish. Once you "understand" the nature of the disease, it willnot really affect you psychologically. Pl. educate yourself as well as your immediate Family so that they do not get too anxious about it. The good news is that it is not contagious. Even if someone touches the patches, it will not spread. Another important point is that it is not life threatening. For all practical purposes therefore, it is a nuisance disease. So have heart secure in the knowledge that THE PATCHES WILL GO AWAY. I repeat - Go to a Good Skin Specialist in Mumbai. All the best !
