Guest guest
Dear friends, This posting is not directly related to vedic astrology, so I apologize in advance. It is, however, related to vedic concepts, as well to astronomy, a close cousin, and build on our discussions regarding the scientific basis for astrology, so here goes. A while back there was a discussion on this newsgroup about the significance of mantra path for 108 times, rather than 100. I just came across this explanation in a different context, and thought people here might find it interesting. ----------------- The distance between the earth and the sun is approximately 108 times the sun's diameter. The diameter of the sun is about 108 times the earth's diameter. And the distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times the moon's diameter. Could this be the reason the ancient sages considered 108 such a sacred number? If the microcosm (us) mirrors the macrocosm (the solar system), then maybe you could say there are 108 steps between our ordinary human awareness and the divine light at the center of our being. Each time we chant another mantra as our mala beads slip through our fingers, we are taking another step toward our own inner sun. (From "the Scriptures: yoga at the speed of light" by Linda Johnsen; May 2003 issue of "Yoga Int'l Magazine" www.yimag.org) ----------------------- Now for the actual numbers. From a google search, I found this link that lists approximate radius and distance for the sun, earth and the moon. http://www.astro.washington.edu/labs/eratosthenes/summary.html The numbers are: Radius of the Earth 6,378 km Radius of the Moon 1,738 km Radius of the Sun 696,000 km Distance to the Moon 384,400 km Distance to the Sun 149,600,000 km So, applying the formulas given, Distance from earth to sun = 108 * sun's diameter 149,600,000 for the left hand side of the equation, 108 * 696,000 *2 = 150,336,000 for the right hand side, which is approximately the same .. Diameter of Sun = 108 * Diameter of Earth 696,000 * 2 = 108 * 6378 * 2 1392,000 = 1377,648 Distance between the earth and moon = 108 * moon's diameter 384,400 = 108 * 1738 * 2 = 375,408 The formulas above do approximate the numbers given above, and of course, both the formulas as well as the actual distances/diameters on the website are approximate. I find this correlation fascinating. Is there any such correlation between the other planets? Any comments, anyone? Thanks, Venkat

Guest guest
Dear Sridhar, Exactly. Not only 27 nakshatras x 4 padas = 108 but also 12 rashis x 9 padas = 108. Because 1 rashi composes of 9 nakshatra padas. 1 rashi = 30 degrees divided by 9 = 3 deg 20 min. which is one nakshatra pada. Each nakshatra is 13 deg 20 min. When divided by 4 it gives 3 degs. 20 min. again. 9 as 9th house denotes the father and 4 as 4th house denotes the mother. The karakas for these 2 houses are the Sun (overlord of the rashis) and the Moon (overlord of the Nakshatras) respectively the father and the mother, the male and female principles of creation. Hence the nakshatras x by 4 and the rashis x by 9 both give 108, the basis of our creation. That is one of the reasons why 108 is an auspicious number as it symbolizes, the unity of prakriti and purusha and the creation of this world. Surely there are other reasons as well.
