In the meantime, some food for thought. WRT the sahams there are two main considerations. 1. Significators or representatives of the Sahams. While you have seen only the Sign lord being used in the previous example (example chart provided by Ragini), there is something more that one needs to know. 2. Timing techniques through Sahams. In the example chart you had seen only the use of a Tajika yoga, where I mentioned that one may probe deeper if one wishes to. But is there any clue about how one can use the Sahams for timing? Yes there is. One major (the most important in fact) thumb rule used is as follows. To know when (in which quarter of the year)the effect of the saham will come to pass, consider the following. If the saham falls in between the Lagna and the 4th cusp, it will happen in the first quarter of the year. Likewise for other quarters. Some say that one should use the houses instead of the cusps. In other words, if a Saham is between 1-3 houses: First qrt of the year 4-6 houses: Second qrt of the year 7-9 houses: Third qrt of the year 10-12 houses: Fourth qrt of the year In the example chart provided by Ragini, the Vivaha (marriage) saham (part) falls at Pisces 19 deg 25 min. Using Sripati houses (Jyotish uses only Sripati bhavas if at all; in Tajika too whereever required we use Sripati bhavas), the Saham falls in the 10th house. The tenth cusp is at Pisces 26deg 51 min approximately. Since the cusp is taken as the bhava madhya and not starting in Sri pati, the Vivaha Saham falls in the early part of the 4th quadrant i.e. between the 10th and 12th houses. So by the above rule the marriage can happen in the early part of the 4th quarter of the year. Since the year starts around 16th/17th October (based on Solar return), the fourth qrt starts around July 16/17th. The marriage should occur after this date before 16th October. But since it is in the very early part of the quadrant, it will be in the early part within this period. This is how the sahams are used in timing. As i said, there is more that one needs to consider before using the sahams and the Tajika yogas. I will deal with all those aspects in my forthcoming article. Once the journal is released, I will post the article here as well. Regards, Satya --- End forwarded message ---
Guest guest
Pranama, Here's my two penny and a question. Saham (arabic word, literally means lot, arrow or share), is an astrlogical technique(sometime called Sabian point in chart) used to closer the interval of timing of any event, based on addition and subtraction of the degrees of ascendant, sun, moon and/or concern house(s). Although the origin of technique is Greece and it is used even in the era of Ptolemy, but Al-Beruni was the first astrologer who revive the theory and developed many new formulae to enumerate Saham. Therefore many saham formulas for natal chart sahams are different from parshana and varshphala. As far as Sahamas are concern, one should not entirely depends on 14 types of Tajik Yogas. Other techniques may includes; (1) Dasha of Saham Lord (2) Aspects recieved by Saham (3) Association of Saham Lord with either Ascendant or Ascendant Lord. (4) Saham's position with respect to Divisional Chart. That is dasa of Saham Lord (i.e. lord of sign in which saham is placed) give the result of saham provided other factors favour. For example if Putra Saham falls in Cancer, the dasa of Moon(or any strong benefic occupied in Cancer) may fructify the birth of a baby child, provided there is strong probability of birth of an issue during understudied year. Secondly the aspects recieve a Saham during course of planetry movement. If said Putra Saham receive a trinal apsect of Jupiter or when conjuct with Jupiter there is strong chance of birth of an issue(for newly married girl) or prosperity of child (for old natives). But if Putra Saham conjunct by either Rahu or Saturn abortion or ill health of child may predict. Similarly whenever saham lord passes through over either lagna or lagna lord, concern result of Saham will be felt, it is generlly the time of feelings personal effect regarding saham, though level of intensity may vary according to the strength of Saham. At the same time Saham's position in related varaga(divisional chart) may helpful in precising the timing. for example Vivaha Saham in Navamsha, Vayapara/Karma Saham in Dashamsa, Vidya Saham in Chaturvimsamsa etc. And lastly is your "quarter of year" technique is not adopted from one of famous direction method? That says 1 years = 360 degrees, Ascendant to IC = 1st quarter/3 months, IC to Descendant = 2nd quarter, Descendant to MC = 3rd quarter and MC to Asc. = 4th quarter of year. Hope to read you soon. Guest guest
Aum Namah Shivaya Dear Imran, Salaam, Good to see you responding to this thread. Please see my comments below. > Saham (arabic word, literally means lot, arrow or share), is an >astrlogical technique(sometime called Sabian point in chart) Yes Saham literally means share or lot. In fact they are still referred to as 'lots' at times, instead of 'parts', which came onto use later. But one small correction, if I may. To my knowledge, they are NOT called Sabian points. Sabian symbols are entirely different and have a different basis. They are of very recent origin. Marc Edmund Jones is the main populariser of these Sabian symbols. I do not endorse the Sabian symbols in Natal charts. They *seem* to work in Prashna basically because Prashna works on the basis of Synchronicity. Again Synchronicity operates in two ways. Synchronicity 0 (for Objective) and Synchronicity S (for Subjective). The second one has the peculiar ability to adapt itself to any situation and method of divination used. So whether one uses tea leaves' patterns or tarot cards or playing cards (!), it can still work to a certain extent. But Natal astrology (and by an extension, Solar Return, Progressions, Directions, Dashas etc) have an *objective interrelatedness too (atleast partly) between the event and the symbols used (say the planets or houses for instance). In other words, to extend the use of a technique or method to the Natal chart or Solar Return etc, it should satisfy the criteria mentioned above. Confusion can arise due to a lack of proper theoretical framework and paradigm behind one's study. That is why I always emphasise that one needs to understand the theoretical framework, rationale and methodology well. But unfortunately many students cannot distinguish between such things. As a result, in the past 100-150 years or so, many things have filtered down the solid basis of Western astrology in general. I do love and recognize the immense value of psychological astrology. But how many practitioners really understand it well? To do psychological astrology, one needs to study and understand Freud, Jung and a few other great minds. Unfortunately modern western astrology is misjudged by many vedic astrologers because 90% of modern western astrologers who purport to do psychological readings, have hardly any indepth knowledge of psychology, except for fragments picked up here and there. And what's more? They lack even the techniques and methods that the average western astrologer had a few hundred years back. Even psychological astrology needs techniques and methods. So the serious astrologer has to sooner or later look to the roots of western astrology for a better understanding. It is here that Medieval, Arabic and Greek works have a major role. Western astrology as practiced till a few hundred years back is not very dissimilar to Vedic, atleast in its purpose and methods. Sorry for the digression. I could not help it, when Sabian symbols came into the picture. Anyway I do not endorse their use in ***astrology for reasons mentioned above (for more on Synchronicity, see my old article on this list). It is a different matter if one wants to use the Sabian symbols as an Oracle. Anyway the Sabian symbols are NOT the same as Arabic parts or Jyotish Sahams or the Greek Lots. >Although the origin of technique is Greece and it is used even in >the era of Ptolemy, but Al-Beruni was the first astrologer who >revive the theory and developed many new formulae to enumerate >Saham. Therefore many saham formulas for natal chart sahams are >different from parshana and varshphala. Yes. They are called Arabic parts because Al-Biruni (974AD) extended their use and popularised them. Greek authors as far back as 300BC do refer to selected 'lots'. They were known to exist even before Ptolemy. It is further said that the Greeks themselves took it from (or atleast were influenced) by the **Chaldeans** who developed this idea even earlier. It is only after *atleast more than a thousand years of existence, that the Arabs took them and further developed them. Apart from Al-Biruni and Albumasar, another good source is the Guido Bonatus. William Lily's well known translation (the 146 considerations) covers only a small part of the Bonatti's work. Bonatti's 'Liber Astronomiae' is a great 13th century work in Latin. We remain indebted to all the above sources for their contribution. The ancient Chaldeans, Babylonians and the ancient Tamil speaking Saivites had certain links and common roots. In fact very few realise that the larger part of Tantra is even beyond and a parallel (if not earlier) tradition seperate from the Vedic tradition, which Hinduism absorbed into itself later. This part is shared by the ancient Jainas too. When one goes deeper, one realises the commonness of humanity and our common heritage. > > As far as Sahamas are concern, one should not entirely depends on 14 types of Tajik Yogas. I will address all these issues and also show the basis for the sahams, how they are derived, and certain inferences that might be useful in predictive astrology. Here I might touch upon the more ancient western sources too for a comparative study. > > And lastly is your "quarter of year" technique is not adopted from >one of famous direction method? That says 1 years = 360 degrees, >Ascendant to IC = 1st quarter/3 months, IC to Descendant = 2nd >quarter, Descendant to MC = 3rd quarter and MC to Asc. = 4th >quarter of year. > Well while the basis seems to be similar, it need not be a *direct adaptation from the direction method. I have seen Indian astrologers doing this. This division of the zodiac into quadrants and the interelatedness of the quadrants to the timing method of one year is something that one comes across even in the purely Indian methods of Prasna. Of course the basis is similar in the symbolism and logic. But the source need not be the same. I have also come across this idea in Bonatti's work.
