Dear Sumeet,

The Ista Devata is seen from the 12th house from Atmakaraka in Navamsa (i.e.

12th house from the karakamsa). The planets which influence this house by

aspect or by placement can lead us to the Ista Devata, who is represented by

the lord of this house. If a planet is placed in this house, it can

intercede with the Ishta Devata planet on our behalf, and so we can pray to

the deity represented by it. In the same way, we can consider aspects on

this house when there are no planets placed there. When we try to find the

Ishta Devata, we must only consider the forms (avatars) of Maha-Vishnu. So,

the Sun and Moon would represent Rama and Krishna respectively.

Dear Sunit,

You are right in assuming that if there are no planets in the 12th house from

karakamasa, then we see the lord. The lord's position, rasi and aspects on it

may guide us in determining the deity. When the 12th lord from the karakamsa is

the atmakaraka itself, then the Atmakaraka can be considered as the ishta. Such

a person is usually very spiritual. When there are more than one planet in the

12th from karakamsa, then be careful in choosing which is the strongest planet

; specially if the nodes are present with any of the luminaries. Try to work it

out with your chart.

Regards,

Sarbani

Gurave Namah Pranams Ramadass Sir, Regarding the concept of ishta devata, as I

said earlier I have been taughtonly little. Am sure there is more to it.

However this is what I have learnttill date. The 12th from karakamsa is the

focal point to determine the Istha devata. There could be 3 situations in this

context. 1. The 12th from karakamsa is empty - In this case the lord denotes

theIstha. 2. The 12th from Karakamsa has one planet - In this case the planet

in the12th from karakamsa denotes the Istha 3. The 12th from karakamsa has more

than one planet - In this case theplanet that is more advanced in degrees

denotes the Istha. Reverse for rahuofcourse. After having said the above, some

people may realize their istha throughsome other means. The destination or

objective of enlightenment is onlyone.. though the means to achieve it could be

many. In such a case, theplanets having Rasi drishti denote the means. Those

planets lead the nativetowards god. Ofcourse the determination of istha should

flexible. This is what little Iknow. I stand to be corrected. Regds Hari

Dear Sunit,

While I am a learner, and not in any way a Guru, I thought I could answer

one question you had regarding sign aspects.

( also written that sign aspect should be consideredalone - Now what this mean

here, I am not able to get

this point here )

There are two sets of aspects to be considered in Jyotish. The most common one

known and used is the Graha Drishti (Planetary Aspect) - the rules of which are

as follows:

1. All planets aspect any other planet and the sign in the 1st and 7th house from itself

2. Mars, Saturn, Jupiter have special aspects; Saturn aspects 3rd and 10th;

Jupiter 5th and 9th;

Mars aspects 4th and 8th from itself.

Some people actually believe that all planets have quarter, half or full aspects

on the 3/10; 5/9 and 4/8 respectively with Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in

particular having full aspects as in 2 above.

The second one is Rasi drishti (Sign Aspect). This is often referred to as

belonging to the Jamini system (but I follow our Gurus paradigm of jyotish

being an integrated one). As per this,

All Chara rasis (Movable signs) aspect all Sthira rasis (Fixed signs) except the one next to them.

All Sthira rasis (Fixed) aspect all Chara rasis (Movable) except the one next to them.

All Dwiswabhava rasis aspect all the remaning Dwiswabhava rasis.

Hence, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Saggi (Dwiswabhava) aspect each other.

Aries (Chara rasi) aspects Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo (Sthira rasis) not Taurus.

Scorpio (Sthira rasi) aspects Capricorn, Aries, Cancer (Chara rasis) not Libra.

My understanding of drishtis is as follows:

a) Only Grahas cast drishtis. Rasi drishti refers only to the drishti cast by a

Graha when in a particular rasi. Its a bit like having a window from your house

to a neighbours house. The windows become relevant only when there is someone

occupying the house (else it is a nice decorative piece but of limited use).

b) Graha drishtis are like the influence of a person at a particular place he

occupies at any particular time: At work, at play, at home, at a friends house

etc. Rasi drishtis are like the influence a person has on a neighbour or a

neighbours house - whom he can only watch through the window or influence

through the window - a remote® influence. It helps but the impact is rather

limited compared to Graha drishtis.

The thing I need to figure out now is when is Graha drishti relevant in

calculations and when is Rasi drishti as there are prescriptions in various

places regarding use of rasi drishtis only. Any gurus, could you please shed

light on this?

Do get Guru Narasimhas book if you are looking for a lucid style of writing (as

he describes it, more like a physics book if I recall correctly) on the tools

in jyotish.

Hope that helps,

Subramaniam
