Dear Pradeep,

Dear Swee ji,

In one of the old mails,

you differenited Pukhraj

from Topaz. On internet these two words are almost synonims. Will you please be

kind to explain the difference

between

them?

Shata

Pranam,

Pradeep

I will quote from Garuòa

Based on the above, Topaz is

categorized as spurious/alien. In the later chapter, the descriptions of the

myriad of colours from the corundum family are

described as below.

These colours

from the same corundum family are reclassified according to their names and

colours. Pushparaga (“Yellowâ€

Sapphire); Padmaraga (Ruby) is actually stated in

there. Indranila (Blue Sapphire); Kaurandaka

(Crimson-Yellow/Padparascha?); Somanaka

(Light/Cornflour Blue); There can be several meanings

to this:

The yellow colour that is being

prescribed for Jupiter is not what has always been actually described. It maybe

the colour of yellow/orange with a tinge of red etc that is typical of

Padparascha (description of this colour is from the

gemstone industry).

Grey is the colour typified in RÄhu (minute impurities especially from magma), so

generally any gemstone that has a greyish tinge

should be avoided. In order for the crafty jeweler to sell these rejects, they

heat them to enhance its colour or brilliance. Heated ones generally have a “glossy

glaze†about it. (This is from years of experience); though it is rather

difficult nowadays to prove that a gemstone is not heat treated whether the gem

is certified or not…..sorry to say.

Topaz has a typical grayish overtone

and its colour is enhanced through heat treatment. This is NOT allowed in the saçtras.

This brings ill luck to the owner (i.e., the person who wears/owns it), plus the

person who instructs the treatment or the man does this treatment.

Technicalities:

Besides clarity, the main criteria is its ability to refract.

Why is that? Simple Imagine a ray of

light entering obliquely into the gemstone, this refraction happens at the

interface of the two mediums. This amount of refraction is called the

refractive index which is really the proportionate relation between the speed of

light into air to that in the gemstone.

A deviation of the light rays caused

by the double refractivity of that gem is not as conducive as the gemstone that

has the single refractive index.

So the difference is its absorption

spectrum is 50% higher than that of “Sapphires†so that’s a minus (for Topaz).

In the matter of hardness, Topaz is

softer than Pushparag (Yellow Sapphire). Topaz has a

perfect cleavage, so it has a tendency to shatter in perfect planes.

In different chapter on the

description of gemstones, different parts of Bala asura are allocated similar

type of gems. Note the 74.1

says it is from his skin. (Mercury!).

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">Mercury when in strength can counteract

the evil caused by Rähu.

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">–Jataka Parijata Vol I Adhyaya II.73-

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">Compare it to this statement:

A

weak or malefic Jupiter causes sorrow due to the evil effects of maledictions

uttered by Preceptors, Devas, Parents and such other

venerable people

and Brähmänas. -Jataka Parijata Vol I Adhyaya II.74 and 79

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">(Mercury and Jupiter are neutral to one

another.)

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">Now we have ascertained that Yellow

Sapphire or gemstones from the Corundum family are more superior, the above

statement indicates that we can wear the gemstone to strengthen that particular

planet. It is also clear that we can also use it to nullify a curse from Guru,

revered personalities etc., treatment of skin disease etc as implied from the statement

74.1.

12.0pt;font-family:"URW Palladio IT"">If this planet happens to be a

(functional malefic), you may offer it as an upaya by

gifting it besides the full arrangements for a proper pacification.

I am cc’ing

this to Varahamihira list and SJC. Perhaps other

experts can contribute
