Om Krishnaaya Namah

Hello,

It's Sri Rama Navami today so here's a nice simple

prayer to Lord Ramachandra:

"raamaaya raama-bhadraaya raamachandraaya medhashe

raghunaathaaya naathaaya sitayai pataye namaha"

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord

Ramachandra, who is all auspicious, the Lord of the

Raghu Dynasty and the husband of Sita-Devi."

Jaya Sri Rama,

Pursottam

namaste, Pursottam.

I am interested in learning about these special days. Is there a

reference that describes them? How often does this occur? Once a

year? Is there a special significance to this day?

Thank you for your time and help with this inquiry.

David, Haribol!

>I am interested in learning about these special days. Is there a

You will be happy you asked this question! (If I err in my naive

description, I hope someone will correct me, as if I needed to say that ;-).

Sri Rama Navami is the day on which Sri Ram was born and later married to

Sita. The story of his life is given in Valmiki's Ramayana. One popular

translation is C. Rajagopalachari's.

The import of this day, which is generally marked by fasting in the morning

followed by feasting in the afternoon, is that it presents us with an

opportunity to consider the good in others, to see their noble virtues,

evaluate how we can help, and consider our own duties, regardless of how

painful it may be to carry them out.

You may download software for calculating the Vaisnava calendar from

http://www.iskcon.org/calendar/ .

Jaya Sri Rama!

Dear Phil;

Hare Krishna. Every time I make a calendar, I can't seem to have it on

Microsoft Word. After making the calendar, where can I view it?

Hi Devendranath, Hare Krishna--

The default place to put the file is in the same directory where the

VCAL.EXE program is, with the name that you gave it with an extension of

..VCC.

For example, I installed the program in "\Vaisnava Calendar", and when I

entered a file name of "CAL2000" it will place the output in

"\Vaisnava Calendar\CAL2000.VCC". This is the file you can open with

Notepad or whatever to print.

The program also leaves a file with a .VCD extension; this is apparently an

intermediate scratch file; you can delete it if you want.

If you have trouble, let me know; since it's an MS-DOS program rather than a

Windows program, it takes a certain amount of getting used to.

Incidentally, the doc-vcal.txt file which comes with the VCAL distribution

makes for an interesting read.

Namaste!

Haribol, David--

Indeed it is for MS-DOS. A quick and reliable resource, then, would be

at http://www.iskcon.net/ies/festival.html for your convenience. I would

still go ahead and download that program, though, if nothing else for the

list of the festivals and what they celebrate.

Hi David,

>>I am interested in learning about these special

significance to this day?<<

As was mentioned by another list member Sri Rama

Navami is the day Lord Ramachandra took birth on

earth. Of course, it happens only once a year. If you

downloaded the Vaishnava Calender program from ISKCON,

I think there is a file which deals with some of the

festivals. If possible, every time one comes up, I'll

try to write something about it as we go along.

Thanks,

Pursottam
