Re: RBSC : re: mantra

Beej mantras have no meanings. The mantra sound sow, or sau, is sometimes

considered a beej sound for the crown, or alternatively the ajna chakra. It is

solar in energy however and masculine. Harish Johari considers the symbol

visarga to be the beej of the crown chakra. What we are discussing is then a

thousand bindus or points of attention as the petals of the lotus. The syllable

SA means "That." Adding the M means the conclusion of "That." The culmination.

Thou art that. Brahman. Nonetheless, the sound doesn't necessarily point

always to the infinite as the smallest or largest aspect of existance, but

depending on context can reinforce many other mantras. Therefore, Soham is a

metaphorical contraction of the mahavakya "I am that." But Hamsa means a swan

and points to the liberated one the paramahamsa. The swan which flys beyond the

pale of this world. The use of this mantr! a is a solar energy of liberation

and is very firery. Don't use too much if pitta, and don't use alone or out of

context. Please give us the source for this beej and the context in which you

are using and the reason for asking. There's no point asking what these things

mean out of context.

Again, thanks to all for the education around sound and mantra. The word

"saum" is not from a book, a Hindu teacher told it to me, so I can't really say

more about it and don't have the ability to contact the person who gave it to

me. I was curious about the word so I looked it up on the internet. I found

many hits saying it's a Muslim word meaning fasting or purification, but the

context I heard it in was definitely Sanskrit and Hindu. So, that's all I have

on it, other than to say, yes, it is one word, not a part of another, and not

really butted up against another, and that it is monosyllabic, and does sound

like "sowm", as one person wrote, with "sow" sounding just like the word for

female pig. I believe it is, like you are saying, a bija.

thanks!

Dear Yogi Ashwini,

I can't say more because I'm not supposed to ever tell anyone the mantra (the

rest of the mantra is made up of other words I know, all quite distinct of

saum). Hopefully I have not erred in inquiring about one part of it. So, I

guess this mystery word will just have to remain a mystery.

But thanks for asking!

Lakshmiji,

Lord Shiva is addressed to in terms of Gayatri Mantra : Om Tat

purushaya vidmahe Maha-devaya dhimahi tanno rudrah prachodayat - that

Tat Purush we hold in our hearts, we meditate on Mahadev , may Rudra

propel our intellects to Him. Shiva is therefore propitiated as the

infinite and all-encompassing Brahman - Tat - wherein all merge

ultimately and attain immortality

I bow down to the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is full of sweet

fragrance and who nourishes all human beings. May the Lord free me

from the bondage of life and death and grant me immortality.

By worshipping Lord Shiva, we cultivate the qualities of infinite

consciousness, detachment and freedom from bondage. Shiva is also the

Lord of Sankalp, the strength of willpower to define and obtain our

goals. He is the destroyer of evil and ambassador of transformation in

this ocean of existence. Every moment of time has a beginning, an

existence and a transformation into something else.

AUM Namah Shivaya
