Pitapuram is also called Second Kasi with Padagaya Temple which is one of the

oldest temples in India. Pithapuram, an abode of Kukkuteswara Swami, is an

ancient town, the district head quarter, formerly known as Pishtapuram.

 

Temples Hallowed as 'swayam bhoolingam' and the place where sage Vyasa with his

followers worshipped Kukkuteswara Swamy, Sri Kunthimadhava Swamy, Peethikamba

and Hoonkarini Shakti, the linga here has wings on either side. The Shiva is in

the form of Cock shape. It is very famous temple. The shiva is called

"Kukkuteswara Swamy" and the Parvathi is called "Raja Rajeswari". The Nandi

infront of the Shiva Linga is very famous and it has the liveliness in it.

There is one Durga Temple in the campus of this temple which is also one of the

AshtaDasa Pithas of Durga Goddess. The Pitham of the Lord Goddess is lying here

and hence the name comes "Puruhuthika Devi" and the town is called as

"Pithapuram".

LegendThe pond here is known as Padagaya as, according to the legend, the head,

the trunk and the legs of the demon king Gayasura, killed by the Triumvirate,

fell in three different places, while the legs fell here. There is a tank

there. The palace of the zamindar of the place is an imposing building,

surrounded by a fort. There is also one more temple of Shri Dattatreya Swamy in

this Temple Campus. It is very famous as the Dattatreya's next incarnation, Shri

Pada Vallabha Swamy, was born in Pithapuram only. It became very famous and

people from all over India especially from West and Notheren side of India used

to come to Pithapuram to have the Darshanam of these Lords. Courtesy:
