safe herbs for pregnancy

Hi,

I am in my first trimester (first month actually) of pregnancy and appear to

have a budding case of strep throat.

I have been told that mahasudarshan would be safe so I began taking it

yesterday. I do not like the taste so I put it in capsules and took two three

times along with a paste of slippery elm, licorice, honey and ghee.

However this morning I got in my inbox a list from a fellow herbalist that none

of these things were suggested during pregnancy, besides the slippery elm.

Could any of the Vaidyas on here make a suggestion, perhaps Todd??

I feel like my midwives would probably reccomend an antibiotic (which I know

mahasudarshan is an herbal sort of version of this) and allopathic antibiotics

are not my preference.

Thank you

Rebecca

poor you rebecca- strep throat really sucks

given your situation i think that you really should get somebody to

help you personally, rather than just take advice off a list

that said however, you need to treat it quickly and then prevent it:

with pregnancy the mucosal tissues tend to become more engorged because

of the influence of estrogen, and thus mucus membranes tend to be more

susceptible to infection

as far as diet goes, avoid all the usuals: no flour, dairy, sugar

fresh vegetable broths with lots of garlic, onion and ginger will be

very helpful - if you can tolerate them

as far as alternatives to antibiotics, i would tend not to worry about

the herbs and their effects compared to the antibiotics themselves

anyway, the doses at which they are emmenagogue are much higher than

typically recommended - its more of a theoretical risk

probably the safest is herb for you is echinacea, but also consider

adding goldenseal, bayberry or osha: all of these will help inhibit the

infection

from an ayurvedic perspective they all reduce pitta and kapha: the

ayurvedic herb bhunimba (andrographis) is also very good for this (i've

sometimes used a chinese patent remedy for sore throat called chuan

xian lian that contains andrographis, isatis and dandelion...)

to relieve the inflammation, take these herbs with soothing, demulcent

herbs such as marshmallow and slippery elm that reduce pitta but

restore mucosal defense mechanisms, e.g. equal parts

Echinacea

Goldenseal

Bayberry

Marshmallow

Slippery Elm

as powders, 1 tsp 3-4x/day

as tinctures, 40 drops 3-4x/day

you can also use this as a gargle - for this i might add herbs like

licorice and sage - spilanthes is a herb that is fantastic for

gargling, mixed with demulcents like licorice and slippery elm

a simple ayurvedic gargle is powders of licorice and turmeric, with a

little salt and water

additional remedies include vitamins A,C,E and zinc

after you get better, i would start taking something to keep your

immune system healthy, such as a good quality chyavanaprash, a prenatal

multi, and an avoidance of sweets and flour products
