Petite Seven-Year Old

Dear Members,

I have a 7 year old daughter - she is my middle child. Her height

and weight have always been in the 30th percentile, when assessed at

regular check-ups with the pediatrician. She is also the shortest

child in her class (Grade 2) and looks rather skinny compared to her

peers. I realize that being Asian (indian), she is likely to be

more "petite" than her classmates. However recently, she slipped to

the 25th percentile and the pediatrician made her take some blood

tests. The blood tests revealed that her hormonal levels are closer

to that of a five year old. We were then referred to a pediatric

osteopath who did a bone test and informed us of the same thing -

her bones are similar to that of an average 5 year old. We have now

been told to make an appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist.

This is quite upsetting since I do not want to pump her with

artificial growth hormones. She has a very small apetite, but is

otherwise playful and cheerful. My other two children are of

average weight and height. My in-laws are rather short (only 5 ft

2" tall) - is she genetically predisposed to be short? I am 5 ft 6"

tall and my husband is 5 ft 8 1/2". Can you please suggest any

ayurvedic medicines/herbs that might help stimulate her apetite and

increase her height/weight?

Please help - thanks in advance!

Best wishes to all,

Dear Anita,

The development of children in pregnancy and later requires adequate

Calcium, Iron and Folic Acid, according to modern science. The

inadequate supply during pregnancy causes this growth problems later

in life.

The harmone imbalance causes hypo/hyper thyroidism and the children

with obesity (monthly 1-2 kg weight buildup, in the age group 6-12

years) or underweight, short height are common nowadays, the main

reasons being toxins through food. These nervous system disorders are

the results of farming, as discussed by author in earlier posts.

Feeding artificial hormones is the dangerous route, as the HRT

treatments have shown earlier. Underdevelopment can be due to

hereditary reasons also. Secondly, the lack of "Gold" in todays milk

products is one reason. Indian country cow milk and the products have

it.

Children should be healthy and strong, not necessarily well built and

tall. The strength of a "yogi" is not seen on his body, but in weight

lifting or exerting a force, for a length of time.

For harmone balance, following (Sr. No.1) is suggested:

1. Soak 1/2 tsp coriander seeds, 1/2 tsp fennel seeds and 1/2

tsp powdered crystal sugar in a cup of water in an earthen pot

overnight and drink it early morning. after drinking repeat soaking

in the earthen pot and drink in the evening. The earthen pot has much

contribution here and should not be ignored.

2 The height of a child increases by feeding them with one

onion mixed with about 20-25 gms jaggery daily.

3. Mix 4 Dates along with coocked Rice starch, grind it well,

add little water in it and give it to children for 2-3 times to make

a weak child strong and healthy. IF child likes the taste, they can

chew instead of grinding.

4 By drinking the mixture of 4 tsp spinach vegetable juice in

honey daily once, makes a weak child strong and healthy.

In receipe 3, you can also add 2 almonds, 1 Akhrot, 2 Cashewnuts, if

available. Adopt only one of Sr. Nos. 3 and 4 receipe.

To improve appetite and metabolism:,

1. Take 1 Tab Agnitundiwati or Navjivan Ras, slight chew and swallow

with warm water after both meals. Consider this Tab as a must if she

is having low B.P. Discontinue this Tab if burning sensation in urine.

2. Take 1 tab per day of Suvarna Malini Vasant, crushed and mixed

well with honey. You can substitute Ghee+crystal sugar in place of

honey here. This treatment is given to quickly build up strength of

children when debility arises due to T.B., Low lengthy fevers, etc.

After 10-15 days, you can make this 2 Tabs per day. This is costly

medicine, some 25 tabs may cost 400/- Rupees. It is better to start

this after taking Tab at Sr. No. 1 for about a month.

Most important, there remains a possibility that the child is

suffering from pin worms or thread worm in the intestines. They do

not give any indication in symptoms except for underweight children.

If present, none of the above remedies will work. Stop curd, milk,

shreekhand, Basundi etc milk products if works present.
