diabetes and karela juice

Hi,

This is my first time posting here, I am interested in aryuveda and have read a

book, but really am a newbie. My husband has diabetes (blood glucose at about

200 fasting) and I have been giving him karela juice in the afternoon before

lunch to help bring down the suger level. Often, after about half an hour to

one hour after drinking the juice, he has a loose, watery bowel movement,

sometimes this happens again later in the afternoon. I am worried about this, I

hope this is not disturbing digestion of his lunch.

Some details: I make the juice using karela skins, and steam the remaining

karela for eating with lunch. I use one or two karelas, depending on size.

This is a very traditional Indian way of making the juice, as far as I can

gather. My husband appears to be mainly pitta ,some kapha type, but as I say, I

am a newbie, I may be wrong.

I hope someone can tell me if loose motions are normal with the karela juice,

and if the dosage is correct. Also is it ok to give him the juice before lunch,

or does it have to be first thing in the morning. I have stopped making the

juice for now, until I have more information... Oh yes, he is also taking a

powder from an aryuvedic shop in India which is mixed for diabetics and he has a

teaspoon of this in grapefruit juice in the morning. Comments please?

Hoping for some input and comments,

Thanks,

Suni

This is a so well known a method. Only thing is wrong

practive and adoption. Most such fresh juices are to

be taken on empty stomach. Secondly, you may please

note that such fresh juices, including the wheat

seadling juice, if taken in even 20% excess dose,

cause loose motions. Maximum of wheat-seedling juice,

as found by practice is around 60 ml, if juiced in

stone mill rather than beater, without adding any

water. Even a dose of 25 ml should be reached in 5

days.

In ayurveda, everyone has a slightly different

"prakruti" than his neighbour. Hence, dosage should be

started on a very small scale, increase gradually as

body goes on accepting the medicine/fresh juice. This

adoption time can vary from 10-15 days.

Due to tendency of Karela juice to cause loose motions

when taken in excess, A number of mixtures are

recommended (e.g. jice extracted from 21 leaves each

of Tulsi, Neem and Bail, the last herb being the one

offered to Lord Siva). But even in mixtures, one

should adopt the body gradually. So is methi soaked

overnight and only water part drunk early morning. The

list is very large. I prefer methi, since it is

readily available in Kitchen, and also takes care of

Vata to some extent.

I hope this answers your querry to some extent.

Regards,

Dr. Bhate
