Even before September 11, stress was no stranger to most of us. But since that day, its sinister presence can be felt everywhere. Worry, fear, frustration, sleeplessness and heartache have become familiar companions, and sometimes just making it from one day to the next seems an oppressively burdensome experience. Because our mind, body, spirit, senses and emotions are inextricably intertwined, mental and emotional problems soon manifest as physical disorders-headaches, acid indigestion, chronic fatigue, nervous twitches -- and, if left unattended, can eventually lead to serious illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. Stress generates free radicals, and an excess of free radicals in the physiology has been widely linked to many degenerative disorders and premature aging. The Ayurvedic Perspective Balance, according to ayurveda, is the key to perfect health. External factors, such as stress, or inappropriate diet or lifestyle, can cause imbalance in the physiology, causing it to become susceptible to disease or aging. Mental stress, for example, which is characterized by worry, or being restless and edgy, or having difficulty falling asleep, or shortness of breath, indicates a Prana Vata imbalance. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three ayurvedic principles that govern the human psycho-physiology. Vata governs all movement in the body, and the mind is governed by a sub-principle of Vata called Prana Vata. Similarly, emotions are governed by a sub-principle of Pitta called Sadhaka Pitta. When Sadhaka Pitta is in balance, positive emotions predominate. When it is out of balance, negative emotions such as a sense of emptiness, sadness, frustration and anger take over the individual. And since the mind and the emotions are linked, a disruption in one can disturb the coordination between the two, potentially disrupting the other as well. Herbs that Heal Maharishi Ayurveda recommends diet and lifestyle principles as well as herbal formulations to help restore balance to mind and body. The Worry Free herbal supplement from Maharishi Ayurveda helps balance Vata, in particular Prana Vata, and restores coordination among the three types of mental ability-learning, retention and recall. The herbs in the Worry Free tablets are combined in precise proportions and prepared in the traditional ayurvedic way. This improves the bioavailability of vital nutrients. It also creates synergy-the collective benefit is much greater than that of isolated, individual herbs. Herpestis Monniera (the authentic Brahmi), Aloeweed (Shankapushpi), Heart-leaved Moonseed (Guduchi) and Licorice (Madhuka) are especially for the mind (Medhya herbs). Aloeweed (Shankapushpi) also nourishes the nerve cells in all areas of the body. Pearl Pisti is traditionally one of the richest forms of calcium, which contributes to good sleep, clarity of mind and normal brain functioning. Heart-leaved Moonseed (Guduchi) has a unique effect of helping clean out the microcirculatory channels of the body. This improves the flow of nutrients to the brain and nerve cells. Muskroot (Jatamansi) has shown beneficial effects in aiding natural nerve regeneration and is well known for its settling effects for the mind and emotions. The Blissful Joy herbal supplement from Maharishi Ayurveda nourishes the mind-body connection by strengthening cells and uplifting your emotions-for a renewed feeling of energy, happiness and an overall sense of well-being. The herbs and minerals in Blissful Joy help promote a natural level of energy, alertness and well-being, assist the body's natural resistance to stress and help balance the mind and improve emotional stability Arjuna Myrobalans is especially known to strengthen the emotional heart. Winter Cherry (Ashwagandha) and Holy Basil (Tulasi), have powerful "adaptogenic" properties. They assist the body's natural resistance to stressful situations. Winter Cherry is also very effective in balancing the mind (Prana Vata) and improving emotional stability. Ailanthus excelsa and Arjuna Myrobalans help strengthen the body's natural rejuvenative processes, hastening the replacement of dead or weak cells with fresh, vital ones. These supplements can be taken individually or together to balance the mind and the emotions.
