Hare Krishna,

I have heard a lot about Gayatri devi, the chanting of

the Gayatri mantra etc. Lord Krishna, says of all the

mantras He is the Gayatri. What is the position of

Gayatri devi and the Gayatri mantra? Can only those

who have obtained the spiritual thread chant it? Can

someone kindly explain.

seeking your blessings.

Actually, it has nothing to do with Gayatri devi. In Sri Tattva-

sandarbha, Srila Jiva Gosvami quotes (Anuccheda 22.7) the Agni

Puraana to explain its meaning:

tajjyotiH parama.m brahma bhargastejo yataH smR^itaH |

That light is called the Supreme Brahman because the word bhargas [in

Gaayatrii] means 'effulgence.' (agni puraana 216.3)

tajjyotirbhagavaan viShNurjagajjanmaadikaaraNam |

shiva.m kechit paTanti sma shaktiruupa.m vadanti cha ||

kechit suurya.m kechidagni.m daivataanyagnihotriNaH |

agnyaadiruupii viShNurhi vedaadau brahma giiyate || agni 216.7-8 ||

That effulgence is Lord Vishnu, who is the cause of the universal

creation, maintenance, and dissolution. Some people say "effulgence"

here refers instead to Shiva, while others say it means Shakti.

Others say it refers to the sun, and still others say Agni. While

chanting Gaayatrii, the braahmanas who perform Vedic fire sacrifices

(Agni-hotriis) worship various demigods. But it is Lord Vishnu who is

present in the forms of Agni and the other demigods, and the Vedas

praise Him as the Absolute Truth, Brahman. (agni puraaNa 216.7-8)

Hare Krishna!

Gayatri mantra has twentyfour (24) sylables, and

considered to have been composed by Rishi VishwaMitra.

Rishi VishwaMitra had the power to create planets, as

he did for Nahusha.

There are seven mothers, and Gayatri is considered as

one!

However,MahaMantra has a total of thirtytwo (32)

sylables, and since MahaMantra does not start with OM,

it can be chanted by anyone.

Gayatri Mantra requies several regulations and need to

be chanted by Dvija- twice born ones at certain

specific timimgs.

Who's "anyone" and why can't they chant mantras that starts with Om? What

happen or don't happen if they chant it?

Does it include:

Om ajyana timirandasya...

Nama Om Vishnu padaya...

Om namo Narayana

Om nama Shivaya

?

Yours:

Omer

Hare Krishna!

Any one includes:-

woman, low born shudras and mlechhas (foreign born-

not born in India).

All mantras starting with OM-as mentioned by you-

do require one to follow Vaishnava etiqutte, rules and

regulations- in order to be effective.

If one chants ONLY mahamantra, and does not chant any

of above mentioned Mantras starting with "OM", it is

okay, according to Chaitanya MahaPrabhu, who

emphasised so in the age of KaliYuga.

Prayag Misra,

Can you please provide evidence for your claims? I believe that is

what Omer was requesting.
