Temple Name

Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Ammavari Temple.

Village & Mandal & Dist

Visakhapatnam (Urban) Mandal & District.

Famous for what if any:

This temple is having a special feature of performing pujas by the devotees

themselvesto the goddess directly without requiring any purohit/ archaka to

perform puja.

LegendsSthalapuranam & Stories behind the Temple & Legends:

So far as Sthalapuranam of this Temple is concerned there is no authentic

information. It is learnt that Sri Kanaka Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru is the family

diety of the then ‘Rajas of Visakhapatnam’. The locality where the idol was

found is called ‘Burujupeta’ since it was near ‘Buruju’ of the ‘Fort’ of the

then Rajas. It is learnt that in the year 1912 the Idol of Goddess Sri Kanaka

Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru was taken out from the well and it was installed at the

center of the road i.e., amidst the Municipal lane. The Municipal authorities,

for the purpose of widening the road, have shifted the Idol from amidst the

road to a corner of the road. During which period i.e., in the year 1917 the

dangerous contagious disease ‘Plague’ spread over the town and so many deaths

occurred

in Visakhapatnam village. The people of Visakhapatnam were afraid of the

incident and thought the devastation was due to shifting of idol of goddess

‘Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi’ and therefore, re-erected Ammavari Idol to its

original place i.e., at the center of the road as it existed now. Owing to

re-erection, the ‘Plague’ disease was cured and normalcy was restored. With

this, the villagers have a staunch belief that it is all due to miracle of

Goddess., and thus from then onwards the Villagers used to worship the Goddess

by performing sevas with much devotion. Further, the people of the vicinity

have strong belief that ‘Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Ammavaru’ is the ‘MOTHER OF

TRUTH’ and will always bless her devotees by fulfilling their requirements. The

lady devotees have staunch belief that the Goddess bless them with “Sumangali”.

The devotees of Goddess bring their newly born babies to the temple and keep

them at the pial of Goddess and seek blessings.

How to reach the TempleThis temple is situated in the heart of the Visakhapatnam

city. Hence all the trains run through Visakhapatnam are having halts at

Visakhapatnam and the temple is situated within the radius of 2 Kms from

Railway Station. From Railway Station/ Bus Station to Temple/ Bus Facility/Autos

etc.Number of city buses plying from Railway Station to the temple. Much more

autos and taxies are also plying from Railway station to the temple.

FAMOUS FOR WHAT IF ANYThe presiding mythological Deity Lord Venkateswara is

visible up to the bust size and the lower portion is imagined to be in the

earth. The holy feet are said to be offered to Bali Chakravarthy in “Pathala”

for his daily worship. The full size idol of Sri Venkateswara is standing at

the back of the Main Idol. Every year two Kalyanams are being performed.

LEGENDSThe devotees who cannot afford to go to Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam to

offer their vows can offer their vows at Dwaraka Tirumala as per the tradition.

STHALA PURANAMDwaraka Tirumala Devasthanam is situated on the top of the

Seshachala Hill. A beautiful legend of untraceable antiquity current in these

parts is that a great sage Dwaraka by name picked up and unearthed the idol of

the Lord from an ant hill, tracing from the position of an eagle perching on

soap nut tree as per instructions of Lord in Samadhi. Hence, the temple and

village were named after the sage Dwaraka. The presiding mythological Deity

Lord Venkateswara is visible up to the bust size and the lower portion is

imagined to be in the earth. The holy feet are said to be offered to

Balichakravarthi in Pathala for his daily worship. The full size idol of Lord

Venkateswara standing at the back of the main idol of Lord has been installed

by the famous Vyshnavite Srimad Ramanujacharya in 11th century A.D. According

to this temple tradition,

two Kalyanams are being performed every year during the months of Vysakham and

Aswayujam, which may be in the month of April-May and September-October

respectively every year. The rituals are being performed as per Vykhanasa Agama

in this temple.

HOW TO REACH THE TEMPLE (TRANSPORT FACILITY) : There is Bus facility available
