Dear All,

Pranams.

We have a religious group here in Jal vayu Vihar Bangalore. At the end of sloka

recitation they recite Manthra Pushpam. I was not taught this by my mother who

was a learned lady in Ubhaya Vedanthas and also a student of Thirukkudanthai

Andavan.I am in a dilemma if I should learn this or not.Kindly guide me.

Simple answer to this is Veda Mantras are prohibited for Ladies. As ordained by

acharyas, vaishnava ladies follow this.

swamin,

My learned father and grandfather also were of the

same view and requested that Vedas are not for the

females. But this was not because of Gender bias.

The explanation my Grandfather told me (incidentally

he was alsovery close to Thirukudathai swami from his

poorvashrama days) was that due to the swara and the

deergha and haswa tones it is not suitable for family

females as most of the sounds are from the bottom

of the stomach.

But ladies can recite the slokas of Desikan and the

nalayiram and others.

Dear Swami,

I can neither contest this reasoning nor know pretty well if I can buy them for

the moment. I also heard such reasonings in the past, but I have not come across

anything definitive on this matter. On the contrary there were lady veda pundits

in the times of yore.

All that can be said at this point of time is that for some really good reasons

recitation of vedas have been prohibited for ladies by poorvacharyas and is in

practise in that form for generations now. Hence that should be respected. I

would only limit my self fto this level for the moment .

Swami,

I have discussed this with my elders also time and

again and the comment of one of my elders in fact

a periyappa who is an acoustics professor that the

creation of these sounds in the proper way as denoted

in the vedas being from the lower abdomen is bad for

women's health due to gynae reasons appealed to us

all.

In case of swamin, differing on this view may please

enlighten me with the reasons, to enable adiyen also

to search for answers.

Dear Bhagavathas,

I also have a similar version regarding women reciting

Vedams.

My Granduncle, Madabushi Gopalan, always used to say that

for vedas the swaras and mainly the OM kaara need to be

generated from the nAbhi of the person reciting the vedas.

When reciting so, the male hormones are generated more and

this was the reason as to why women were asked not to recite

vedams. But still, we have Gargi and Maitreyi, wives of

Yagnavalkya, who recited the vedams. Sometimes, through

generations may some information gets distorted. My granduncle

also used to tell me that women are to recite "am" instead of

"Om" for the same reason too.

Dear Bhagavatas:

I entirely agree with Sri M.G.Vasudevan Swamin.

Those who have read the book "Hinduism Rediscovered" will find

that most of their doubts they have raised (or not yet raised)

have been clarified.

Also, those who seek to post such debatable issues are advised

to first go into the archives of Bhakti, Saranagathi, Sri Ranga sri,

Oppiliappan, etc sites to see if the questions

had already been discussed. I am sure that they will invariably

find answers.

If they are not still satisfied, they may pose their queries

with specific points for clarification instead of in a

generalized form that tend to divert the focus.

Respected moderator,

time and again the same point of whether ladies are eligible to chant vedha

manthras is appearing in one form or other. i request moderator to filter this

subject at the 'clearance of mail stage' itself as it serves no real purpose

except creating one more round of discussion mostly in the same lines as

earlier.

this is not to discourage questions of such nature but to have useful

discussions on them.
